  2. This might be my favorite quote of the day! Isn't this so true?? That is actually one of the ways I continue pursuing my fitness program, so I'm accountable to the hype. When someone says, "Oh my gosh, you didn't run TODAY, did you?", I simply love it when I can follow with a humble - yes.
  3. LOL! I'm victim to a consistently runny nose, too. Removing peanuts and soy seemed to help me the most with that. I quit my supplements for my W30 because of the soy oil base. Your fitness is impressive and inspirational!! I'm unfamiliar with many of the terms from your other post in the athletes forum, but I want to investigate now! Good luck! As you already know, one day at a time or even one meal at a time. You don't have to worry about the next 23 days, just your next meal.

    Biometrics report

    OH MY GOSH!! I just got back the medical summary from our yearly health screening at my workplace. I AM AMAZED!! For the past 5 years I've been actively losing weight, exercising and eating better. Each year my results have improved, but the jump in results this year is nothing short of miraculous!! I'm lucky that my glucose has always been good. My blood pressure was controlled by medication prior to 3 years ago when I lost just over 100 lb. and was able to discontinue it. Since then it has been in range and holding steady. But this is the great news: HDL (good) cholesterol is up 5 points. LDL (bad) cholesterol is down 14 points. Total cholesterol is down 11 points. Triglycerides are down 17 points. ALL my numbers are in the green/optimum range!! (Except BMI... Still working on that one.) THANK YOU, THANK YOU WHOLE30!! I AM SO HAPPY!! I was genuinely worried that all the meat and eggs I had been eating lately might have a negative impact on my health screening results. Silly me!! REAL FOOD is the answer!
  5. This will be my second mini reset since my day 30 on September 10. Peanuts seem to be the only thing I *need* to avoid. I've never been a big fan of legumes, so that probably means I don't know how to prepare the properly. I just had blood taken to get the health insurance discount at work. It will be interesting to see the difference in my cholesterol and triglycerides after all the meat I've been eating. If those numbers are trending the wrong way, I may investigate more legumes, too! My biggest concern is avoiding peanuts, gluten and added sugar. Got to keep that sweet tooth tamed!!
  6. I get that, I do. But one thing I did not count on... IS ALL THE MONEY I'VE SAVED!! I was online paying bills lately and I was rolling in cash!!! I was afraid I'd forgotten to pay something important so I started to look through trends from the past few months v. earlier in the year and I'm spending much, much less on food. I'm eating MORE, eating better, feeling better, losing weight very slowly and saving money. It's phenomenal. I also spend more time standing up and moving around the kitchen either in prep, cooking or clean-up instead of spending that time being sedentary looking at a screen. For me personally, I haven't missed a single thing by reducing screen time. I'm still mostly W30 except for sauces/condiments, breakfast meats, and wine. OK, and the occasional REAL dessert. But when I find myself slipping back into old habits, I take a W30 "break" for 4 - 5 days and go back 100%. That's usually enough to make me behave again.

    Full Body vs. Split Routines - Which to Choose?

    I believe my trainer would say BOTH but alternately. Do split routine for 2 weeks, then switch to full body for 2 weeks, then switch back. She would say - Keep your body guessing... "Oh my gosh, what is she doing? I've never done this before and I'm exhausted. BURN MORE FUEL (fat) !!"
  8. How's it going Amura? I feel like I need to do the same. I've been to several weddings and other celebrations this fall, my birthday was recently (which one must enjoy several times over with different groups: friends, family, work friends!) Thanksgiving is just around the corner, etc., etc. I'm afraid I have fallen off the wagon and it has run me over. This is a very good time for a reset - starting Friday, after my work friends and I have gals' night out!
  9. I'm continuing to struggle with a pre-workout meal. My post-run meal is called breakfast and my post-workout meal is called dinner, so I've got those covered. But getting some fuel at 5:30am and again in the car between work and the gym is perplexing me. Is this an option?? Over the weekend I made a smoothie with a gooey banana, almond butter and coconut milk THEN I PUT IT IN THE FREEZER! The next morning I took it out and thawed it in the microwave enough to be able to get a spoon in it. I added some blueberries and sliced almonds to the top and ate about half of it before my run. Is this an legitimate option since I'm using a spoon and chewing? Or am I cheating by making a smoothie? Just FYI, my W30 was up in early September, but I love how I feel and I'm working to stay W30 about 5-1/2 to 6-1/2 days a week.

    R1D31!!! I did it! My thoughts on how it went...

    Love this!! Isn't it great and greatly freeing to FEEL the difference??!! My day 30 was Sept. 10 and I'm continuing as close to W30 as reasonable for me. (Ex: now I eat ketchup sometimes, breakfast sausage sometimes, I don't order anything with cheese but if cheese comes on it I don't made a big fuss, red wine now and again.) And just now I'm starting to notice my portions have been too big. I'm actually satisfied with about 75 - 80% of the amount of food I've been eating since mid-August. During W30, I made my plate and ate the whole thing regardless. It was A LOT of food! Now I'm actually in touch enough to know I can stop before the plate is empty because I'm satisfied. HUGE STRIDES!! Congratulations! I can see a noticeable difference in both photos!!

    Possible pre-workout meal option?

    Well, now that you mention it, I'm not sure either...? I read the WHOLE30 book and that is what it suggests to get your body amped up and ready to start burning. In my mind running is a workout, so I was looking for ways for me to get in a pre-workout meal. I've been running routinely for about 5 years prior to my W30 and never had anything to eat prior to running, but if it would help my performance, my energy, my fat burning/muscle building then I was ready to try it. As stated, I've thus far not figured out something that works for me - so maybe I DON'T need this piece! How eye-opening! Thank you so much for your input, @slc_melissa and @True Primal !! At ease!

    Very good point, thank you! I guess I've been thinking almonds = peanuts, and "everyone" is always talking about eating peanuts for protein. Everyone except the W30 tribe! Thank you for the excellent suggestions. I love sweet potatoes and can certainly work with that. The protein is pricey, but looks ideal for my purposes. I have a hand-held immersion blender and I'm not afraid to use it. I'll give this a go next week!

    Heavens no! I do not ever feel overly hungry or tired or that my performance is suffering. I lost 4 lb. during W30 and another 3 lb. in the 5 weeks since. My goal is to lose 11 lb. more to hit "normal" on the BMI scale. I don't know why that's my goal, but it is... so continuing on this gentle path is working great for me! I run 5K on Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat mornings. I workout (45 min) at the gym on Mon/Wed and most Fridays, unless I get a better offer! *Sometimes* (2x per month max) I do Zumba on Tuesdays, Pilates on Thursdays, yoga on Saturdays. Just trying to keep my body guessing! I'm divorced and my 2 kids are grown, so fitness is my hobby now! I've also been working for the same company for almost 30 years so I'm well established enough now to LEAVE ON TIME and get to my activities. I started this pilgrimage in Feb. 2014 and have worked up to the schedule above. Thank you for asking!! If you care to and can find it, look at the photos in my profile. As I've stated before, I can fairly easily do W30 5.5 - 6.5 days per week and I feel great! The only thing I can't seem to master is the pre-workout meal. Sigh....

    Yes, I'm post W30, but I figure if the "chewing to make our body know it's time to start burning fuel for energy" works during W30, then it should work for me in my post ~ 85% W30 life style?? There is protein in the almond butter, but not a lot. I could add some protein powder, which I lived on prior to W30, especially if I can find some not artificially sweetened? My bigger problem is I'm TOO FREAKIN' LAZY to miss even one minute of sleep, so I want to eat something in the mornings that is as compliant as possible but doesn't take a lot of time to prepare and is not hard to digest resulting in GI issues during my run. I was hoping I had stumbled onto a *genius* W30 hack to meet all needs! Thank you for the links, I will continue to research and pursue!!
  15. I'm too old for the hormone train to run me over, so thankful for that! But I so agree with how much easier it is when you are following strict W30 rules than when we're flying solo! When people asked me about my W30 and exclaimed over how they could NEVER manage it, I always answered that it's not these 30 days that worry me, it's the 335 that follow. I love your guidelines above and doing much the same for myself. I lost 4 lb. during my W30 (day 30 was Sept. 10) and 3 more lb. since. I feel very good about that, this is very sustainable for me. One tip I learned elsewhere about guideline #7 (sweet treats) - the best bite is the first bite and the second best bite is the last bite, all other bites are just the ones in the middle. So limit yourself to 2 EXCELLENT bites! I pick apart my dessert serving until I have separated out the *perfect* bite and I savor it. Then I do that all again for my last bite. Yes, those 2 bites are pretty big bites, but not as big as the entire serving. Just wanted to share what is helping me! My biggest W30 benefit was getting over thinking I needed dessert at every meal and tricking my sweet tooth into thinking things are sweet that I did not think of as sweet before, like plain almond butter and dates. If you have this in your area, look for Kalot Superfood nut butters. THEY ARE WORTH THE MONEY! As long as I don't fall back into the habit of finishing each meal with a serving... Here I would like to say "Bless your heart!" and me, too - except my parents have a problem with alcohol, not desserts. It's like I've grown a tail and whiskers when I say no thank you to a beer, wine or cocktail. They are flabbergasted that non-drinkers exist. I started pouring myself a glass of Kombucha to carry around and sip. They finally left me alone when I told them this is a fermented tea. I guess the term "fermented" put them at ease... Cheer to us! We're killing this!!
  16. Today is day 31 and I lost 4 pounds. I was hoping for 4 - 8, so not disappointed especially considering I've been eating like a lumberjack. Seriously. I've had ribeyes at least twice a week, handcut French fries under the broiler, everything sautéed in ghee and I've finished off 4 JARS of different nut butters. (Walnut butter is my fave.) I'm reintroducing legumes today, just to see what's up, but I'm planning to keep the general W30 thing going for about 14 more lb. with limited exceptions (my daughter's birthday next week, wedding in late Oct, etc.) Just FYI about my start - I'm 55. 5 years ago I weighed 274. After starting Zumba, then walking, then eventually running, then cutting calories, then adding weight training, then counting macros, I lost 105 lb. in 2.5 years. And I have been on a solid plateau since. W30 is my jump-off-the-plateau plan to get to my goal of under 155. My journey is pretty text book, days 5-6 I thought I was getting the flu! I had itchy skin on my neck and upper chest for 8-10 days in the middle. My constantly drippy nose has almost completely cleared up, except during the hardest workouts. Day 28 was literally the hardest day ever. I desperately wanted an English muffin, then a Snickers bar, then a cocktail, but I survived. Because I don't need it I don't have my 10am nor my 2pm cups of coffee anymore. I also don't have a snack after work anymore. I never mastered Pre workout meals. I'll focus on that as I continue. I have not seen a huge change in running or workout performance, but a dress I bought 2 summers ago that I could never really wear comfortably now fits well and looks pretty good on this ol' girl! My favorite W30 hacks are: 1. Breakfast sausage of ground pork seasoned with cayenne/cumin/paprika, hand-pattied and fried in the same pan as the eggs and spinach. 2. Steak sauce made with Murray's olive tapenade/tomato paste/Coconut Aminos. 3. I found the 2 W30 salad dressings I tried to be overly tangy, so I drizzled some tahini over my salads and added 1/2 the usual amount of dressing. 4. Plantains cut in half, then each half cut into 4 slices long-ways, then browned in ghee, served with a drizzle of coconut cream and a dash of cinnamon. 5. A wine glass of Kombucha to round out the evening while relaxing before bed (the spot formerly filled by wine). I honestly can't believe how fast this time went. After 1 week, it was all fairly routine. My biggest struggles were days with little structure which for me is Saturdays. I even managed to attend a couple of local baseball games with little difficulty. In the morning when I packed my lunch for work, I also packed my dinner. When I got home, I popped it in the microwave, took it in the car with me, and ate it in the parking lot before entering the stadium. (On both occasions, I sneaked in a La Croix and a baggie of mixed nuts. Shhhh....) Problem solved! Thanks so much W30 community! I have enjoyed reading everyone's questions, getting advice and growing healthier together!! Let's keep at it!

    Another NSV that I keep forgetting to mention - my fingernails are getting really solid and strong! Maybe it's just my inner cavewoman getting ready for winter? But I'm attributing this to my diet. My hands look lovely!

    Kirbz's Whole30 Log

    My daughter did W30 with me and these where her thoughts exactly. I live way out in the county and have lots of food in the kitchen and more of a routine for cooking and packing, but she lives in town, has a full and part time job, a big active dog and an busy, fun husband and social life. She would find herself just not eating because eating W30 was too much trouble, and she lost 17 lb. I actually ate A LOT more in calories and volume during W30 and still lost 4 lb. But she is really struggling to sustain. I am not struggling at all because all I had to due was change the foods I was buying at the grocery store. I don't have any suggestions or solutions for you other than to say that she and I understand and commiserate!

    Whole 30 (July 2)

    Oh my gosh, isn't this wonderful??!! I was fishing last week at my parents' farm and caught a nice fish. I held it up and my fella took my picture with his phone. I assumed it was just upper torso, head and fish, but when he sent it to me, it was a full body shot - AND I LOOKED GOOD!! I wasn't posing or sucking anything in, and I still looked good!! It is so nice not to fret over my appearance constantly. I just look normal! And life is just generally easier when my mental real estate isn't constantly battling self esteem issues. It's just such a huge relief. YAY US!!

    My Journey from a Day 31 perspective

    I've been away from home on vacation for 9 days and now back to the real world. I went to visit my parents which involves A LOT of eating out and more drinking than my routine. I stayed about 60 - 70% W30 overall, but I did eat a sub sandwich from my favorite local spot and a sugar cookie shaped like a football while tailgating. I had one square of thin pizza at happy hour, and a slab of cornbread at the fish fry. My big splurge for the drive home was a massive burger on a pretzel bun (1/2 for lunch, 1/2 for dinner) and a cup of frozen custard. I didn't order anything with cheese, but didn't avoid it if it was there. I had almonds and several LARA BARS to get me through rough spots and to help me manage the long drive (about 840 miles). I did try peanuts again, this time not with soy. I didn't notice any ill effects, so it seems that soy is more of a problem for me than peanuts. But I plan to stick with tree nuts and tree nut butters for the most part. I weighed myself my first day back and I had gained 1 pound. That is quite a success after partying for 6 days straight (or as much as one can party with 80-year-olds!) My plan going forward is to remain about 90% W30. I'll probably eat ketchup, BBQ sauce, cocktail sauce, etc. especially if I'm away from home. And I'll have wine or beer 2 - 3 times per week. Other than that, I don't miss a lot of the foods I cut out. And I'm still pretty successful at NOT ending each meal with dessert. That was my biggest goal with W30, to tame the sugar dragon. So, again, this is a smashing success for me!

    My Journey from a Day 31 perspective

    For the past couple of days, I've been reintroducing gluten grains and it went much better than expected after the non-glutens posted above. I had a beer Sunday night, whole wheat spaghetti noodles with lunch on Monday, on Monday night I had another beer and 2 small slices of deli whole grain bread (16 g, each), the same 2 slices of bread with breakfast Tuesday morning. Nothing seems amiss. The bread was delicious, literally tasted like cake. I broiled it with some slices of sun dried tomatoes on top and some of the oil from that jar. Although to be completely candid, I got very emotional on Tuesday morning. I made a conservative decision that made me very angry at myself (for listening to others and not following my desires/instincts). I got a little tearful on the drive into work. When I walked into the building, I had to wait it out for a bit in the locker room to get the tears under control before I actually started my work day. I was angry and sad, but I rarely cry, especially at work!! It may be a complete coincidence? Perhaps that would have been my reaction regardless, but it's worth sharing, I think. Bad decision will be rectified tomorrow! Back on W30 for awhile. I still need to test beans and then re-test peanuts and soy separately. I'm still hanging on to no desserts after meals, no treats with added sugar, not dragging meat through a trough of sauce. I consider W30 to be a ringing success overall!!

    September Whole30 Win

    That is great! Thanks for all the suggestions! I've been doing simple cooking pretty well but haven't ventured into the level you described, but I need to and I can, if I make the time for it. I was proud of myself for just making ghee... which I use every day. My favorite thing so far has been olive tapenade which I can get at the olive bar at Kroger. I put that sh** on everything!! Grilled fish, chicken, pork. Then for beef, I add a little tomato paste and coconut aminos for my own version of steak sauce. That has been my go-to meal save.

    My Journey from a Day 31 perspective

    Yesterday I reintroduced oatmeal/corn/rice, and I do not like how I feel today. After the oatmeal breakfast, I felt this mild jolt vibrate through my entire body lasting about 10 minutes after I'd finished my oatmeal. It was not unpleasant, but certainly not normal, not quite jittery but borderline. Then I fought gas for a few hours. Lunch was W30, but for dinner I had corn tortilla chips (maybe 10) with salsa, then a carnitas bowl on top of Mexican rice. I ate late, after socializing on the patio with neighbors (fire pit, watching sports). Again, much more gas than normal before bed. I did a run/walk with a friend this morning before work and I felt dizzy. Afterward I needed to rush to the bathroom and again about an hour later. Since then, I continue to feel slightly dizzy and the littlest bit shaky/jittery, like something just startled me (you know how you feel right after you see a snake? or narrowly miss a car accident?) My hands feel funny. This is icky and I do not like it! I brought half of the carnitas bowl over rice for lunch today, but I don't think I'll eat it. So I have 2 burning questions: 1. Did I always feel this way before and just didn't notice or got accustomed to it? 2. What in the world will gluten grains do to me when it's their turn??

    Starting Whole30 Monday Sept 16

  25. I felt and sometimes still feel the very same! My day 30 was on 9/10, but I'm reintroducing slowly and still doing full W30 on the in between days. I've had such an inconsistent relationship with food for so long that I'm still learning what is hungry and what is satisfied. I eat a LARGE amount of meat, a LARGE amount of veggies and an appropriate amount of fats when it's mealtime regardless of how hungry or not I was when I sat down. And when my plate is empty, sometimes I still feel something that I identify as hungry. How can this be when I've just consumed SO MUCH? I've been telling myself that whatever that sensation is, it's NOT hunger. I busy myself with cleaning up, talking to someone, slowly drinking a cup of tea or glass of Kombucha and then reassess. Usually after 15-20 minutes that sensation formerly known as hunger is gone and sometimes I'm downright full. I'm trying to aim for satisfied instead of full, so I make a mental note to have slightly smaller portions next time. I'll agree, that's it's... weird, that funny feeling after eating. But for me, I have to remind myself that just because my stomach (or whatever it is) has a sensation, it does not mean it's hunger. Maybe it's full and I just can't completely identify it yet? So basically, I have nothing helpful to add whatsoever other than to say, Me too!!
