  1. So I'm continuing with my extremely slow role intro-- combining worth it things with days of whole30 compliance and then adding a specific food to see how it effects me. I am pretty much done with all the things I wanted to specifically reintroduce separately (ex corn, rice, peanut butter)  I found I had HORRIBLE brain fog with peanut butter the day after eating it. Disappointing, but good to know. I'll have to add it to the only when truly worth it category. Other than that (I already knew about gluten from a past whole30) I think I'm ok with most foods. So, I will probably add dairy and non gluten grains back. Be very careful with legumes and avoid gluten all together. I'll also only do dessert or alcohol for special occasions or worth it treats. I'm really glad I did such a slow reintro period this time (4th whole30) instead of jamming it in to 10 days to get on with life. I feel that I'm more purposeful when I menu plan and have been eating much healthier and making better choices since Jan 2. Hoping that this is my food freedom and I can continue on with this long term. It sure does get easier as time goes by. Hope everyone else is doing well. Please check in if you ever happen to visit the site again.  I do check occasionally myself :)

I am excited to start another round of Whole30! I really feel so much better and I find it fairly easy to do! Anyone else starting on Ash Wednesday??

I'm not, but I'm curious if you are doing a whole Lent or just 30 days?  Best of luck to you!

  3. I've been eating whole30 mostly for most days now... I do occasionally go off plan for worth it things-- I had 3 chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine's Day, but am staying on whole30 otherwise. I am feeling more confident about my food choices. We had a "date night" with the kids at Chick-Fil-A the other day and I packed my own grilled chicken salad with dressing to eat there. I helped my son finish his fruit cup and stayed completely whole30 that day! Finding my groove with eating properly and still treating myself when it's worth it. Hoping I can make these habits stick around for good.

  4. I did 32 days of whole 30 before I started introducing things. So far I've reintroduced dairy, which seems to be fine for me! Had it Friday and then was complaint all Saturday and Sunday.  And corn. I had corn yesterday. Today I had a small itchy spot on my neck. I'm not sure of it was the corn or something else externally.... It has gone away within an hour. I'm thinking after I do all other reintros I will attempt corn again and seen what happens. Provided nothing else pops up the rest of today or tomorrow.

Oh, I am starting up my elderberry syrup too, to boost immunity. I gave it up during January. That is made with honey, so I guess I'm not completely compliant anymore. But since most other diets like this say a little honey is ok and I think no honey on whole30 is more due to a sugar dragon taking than anything else, I feel fairly confident that I am still doing reintros correctly. I hope. Anyway, I take 2 TBS a day and honey is one of the last ingredients listed, so it isn't much.

Congrats to all as well!  I started my morning with a stop at Starbucks for a Pistachio Latte.  As I was ordering it, I noticed that it was 320 calories .  That's 320 calories I have been regularly drinking that I cut out without even noticing this whole month!  I don't always get a pistachio latte, but it is generally lattes. My main meals for the day will be complaint - eggs for breakfast, sausages with mustard and carrots and guacamole for lunch, and a curry for dinner.  So I think my only noncompliant foods will be my latte and potentially some candy :P.

    My measurable differences:

    - 13.6 lbs lost (5% of my bodyweight - I started Whole30 severely obese and am now only in the obese category)

    - Lost 1.25 inches around my bust (wouldn't have minded keeping those inches lol)

    - lost 1.5 inches from under my bust

    - lost 2 inches from my waist

    - lost 1.25 inches from my gut/lower belly

    - lost 1.25 inches from my hips

    - lost 1.5 inches from my left thigh (assuming the same for the right, but I don't measure both)

    My non-measurable differences:

    - reduced cravings (can't say no more, because PMS hit me hard this cycle)

    - I'm able to better recognize whether I'm actually hungry, or just eating because it tastes good or I'm bored

    - more consistent energy throughout the day

I did not manage to get pregnant this cycle, unfortunately, but I did ovulate (which hasn't happened for a lot of my cycles)

Hope you enjoyed your latte! Sorry no pregnancy for you, but hooray for ovulating!! That's a good sign.

You guys. I was made aware yesterday that I have been doing reintroduction wrong EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I thought that once you added something back in, it was back in - even as you add in other things one by one. Apparently that is wrong, and a quick look at the Whole30 website guidance confirmed. So, for example, I'm adding in legumes today. After today I shouldn't eat legumes again until I've gone through everything else one by one.

Maybe this is why I've never been able to pinpoint things....

    What is everyone starting with?

Oh no!! I'm so sorry that there was confusion about reintro for you. So glad you got it straight now!! Hoping you can figure out some triggers.

  7. Hi, everyone! Starting this thread so we can help support each other in the reinroduction phase! I'll link this to the original thread titled "Whole January" I hope I see lots of you in here!

Happy Day 31!!!! Congrats! We made it! Woohoo!!

I lost 4 lbs, my skin is clearer and the occasional brain fog I had is completely gone..... well, 99% of the time unless I sleep poorly!

So far today, I've stayed compliant. I'm contemplating what I want to intro first, but I was up so much last night  with my son, who was having nightmares and just a bad night and ended up with me--- so-- not sure I want to intro anything today since I'm already feeling yucky due to no sleep.

    How's everyone else doing?

I was surprised how easy it has been to give up sugar. I was a total addict. But now I have zero interest. Not even in reintroducing it. I'm much more interested in bread and grains in general. And wine. Something about a glass of red wine, warm sourdough slathered in butter. But I've decided SLOW reintroduction. Also, I got rid of my TV. What a relief that is to have more space in my life. It's helped with food cravings as well. I paired watching movies and food + would add my laptop in there to work. Now I'm cleaning more, walking, and working in a more concentrated, focused way. Wow. I'm loving the habit changes that domino out of the W30.

WOW, good for you for changing so much in your life this month! Sounds like you've hit your stride. I need to amp up the movement, but it is soooo hard with my young kids. I need to find a way to make it work.

I'm pretty excited for the end of this Whole30.  I don't do the reintroduction anymore after my first time, but I probably should since it has been about 4.5 years since then and I'm sure my body has changed.  I also haven't given a ton of thought to how I'll eat starting day 31... I would like to cut back on added sugar for sure.  I'm planning to pack my normal breakfast and lunch for work, so that'll be compliant, but otherwise I don't know

I kind of inadvertently gave up caffeine for most of this Whole30.  Got a small nitro cold brew at my coffee shop yesterday and wound up drinking it all (normally I'd sip on it during my meeting and dump most of it after I left the coffee shop).  I was up until 7:30am this morning... I had to call off work since I would only get about 1 hour of sleep before having to start.  So I'm actually a bit nervous about how my body will react when I get lattes again after reintroducing dairy...

Oh no!! Hope you are able to rest and get that caffeine out of your system! Feel better.

Yes, it becomes a bit overwhelming. I'm doing legumes first because I don't eat them that much anyway, so I don't think they're the problem. With non-gluten grains, I'll probably do rice first and then corn separately - those are the two that I eat the most frequently. Then dairy, then gluten will be last.

I'm also planning on doing rice and corn separately! For the same reasons-- I eat a lot of them. I will also reintroduce my gluten free flour blend on a separate day as well since that has rice flour, but also other things.

I'm so interested in the experiences of those of you who have done Whole30 before (this is my first one). If you did reintroduction before, and already know what does/doesn't affect you, do you still do re-introduction of the things that didn't show an effect last time? If so, is that because things can change over time, or...?

Not trying to be nosy, just want to learn. :)

Yes, for all the reasons you stated! Bodies change and I already learned about gluten. At some point I may want to try reintroducing gluten again to see how I do, but-- it took me 2 whole30s to realize that gluten was in fact a problem since the problems don't come for several days afterwards and then I would still make exceptions for "worth it" items, but as I went along with avoiding it and then having it, I understood also the subtleties of what it did to me in regards to heart palpitations and anxiety and itchy spots on my skin that previously I never understood were related to gluten consumption. So now-- gluten is never worth it. I do accidentally consume gluten on occasion (last time was in October when I ordered gluten free pasta at a restaurant, was surprised at how yummy the dish was and then later, when my husband tried some he told me, that is NOT gluten free! Oh, I paid for that for about a week. Because, again, my symptoms don't show up right away, but I have bloating and digestive issues a couple days later and then the anxiety ramps up and itchy spots last for a week or so after the digestion clears up)

So, just in general with the way I'm feeling overall-- I do believe that I am probably not triggered by other categories, except for sugar and alcohol which, let's face it, isn't good for anyone.... BUT-- I'm still going to reintroduce since I don't know FOR SURE that I didn't develop a dairy sensitivity or something along the way.

    Hope that helps.

Alcohol is tricky for me. I LOVE wine - the taste, all the science behind it, the endless variation among and within different varietals, all the history of winemaking... All other alcohol I could easily give up, but wine is harder. But after reading (in the Whole 30 and It Starts with Food and then in additional research I did) about how bad alcohol is for you, I feel like I should give it up - but I just don't want to. So I need to do more thinking on that one.

Yes, I feel the same! It's such a cultural thing, really! And so nice to bond with friends over. But-- I know alcohol isn't the best. I'm going to try to leave it out until after reintros and then be VERY mindful about when it's worth it. Or at least try to be!

    - particularly recognizing my patterns of self-soothing with alcohol or food (or both, let's be honest). This season of life is just really stressful, with young kids, aging parents, and career advancement. I definitely need to find better ways to cope. Part of that will be waiting to reintroduce alcohol or sugar. I think

What are everyone else's reintroduction plans?

I so could've written this! Stressful being the sandwich generation. And yes, my once a month gladd of wine slowly turns into a 5 times a week glass of wine and I dont want to do that anymore! I really dont have a reintro plan, which is bad I know!! I keep going back and forth between structured and slow role. The only thing I won't reintroduce is gluten as I found out on a previous whole30 that was bad for me.

Hope everyone's weeks are going well!  It's hard to believe we're in the home-stretch.  Only 5 more days for those of us who started Jan 2nd!

My husband is done since he left for a Bachelor party today, so I'm on my own now. I'm so tempted to finish up early too - especially since I'm PMSing and craving chocolate. I made this Spinach and Artichoke stuffed mushroom recipe today for dinner to treat myself (sans the parmesan and with Kite Hill dairy-free cream cheese, obviously).  It turned out pretty good!  Although in hindsight, it'd have been better with larger mushrooms like portabella, instead of baby bella.  The tiny mushrooms were hard to stuff, and I'd have preferred a bigger filling to mushroom ratio.  I have the leftover filling to have at a later time - just trying to figure out what I want to do with it.  Thinking about maybe doing an omelet tomorrow or Saturday.

Oh yum! Saving this for a superbowl app idea!

I made a Thai chicken recipe in the slow cooker last night and am eating it for breakfast now with cauliflower rice. It's ok, but I don't think I'll put this recipe on file!

Only 4 days to go!! Woohoo!! I think I've decided I'll do an extremely slow roll intro this time instead of extending or putting pressure on myself to meet certain criteria.  I want to weigh myself if nothing else!

Every Whole30, I've made it a goal to get more movement and then I never do.  I think I've been to the gym like 4-5 times all month.  Thinking about trying to do C25K starting in February or March once it starts warming up.  I just live such a sedentary life since I WFH most days now and drive into work (before the pandemic, I took public transit and walked to work 5 days a week, which netted me at least 8000 steps a day), so I need to find a way to routinely incorporate movement into my day

I find it so overwhelming with meal prepping and batch cooking that I also never get more into the movement portion! Oh well- good idea though about being more intentional with walks when the weather gets a bit warmer!

I'm finally feeling like I am doing a whole30! I am still contemplating extending to 45 days since it just kicked in the last day or two. Between the detox, a virus and a nasty menstrual cycle, my body is finally "over the hump" and I would like it to last more than just 10 days or so! So--- as much as I'm "over this" I'm also seriously considering two more weeks to enjoy having energy.

It's still not like feeling I have boundless energy-- but I surprised myself the last few days with how much I got accomplished. Much more than previous to do lists, so-- even though I don't feel like I have boundless energy, I apparently do have lots of energy! Know what I mean?

  16. Day 21! How'd this happen so fast? Feeling pretty good. Wishing the tiger blood would be more forceful. I do have a bit more energy and some NSV, but nothing like a switch flipped. Also starting the "I'm so over this" part of the timeline for sure. I am still only getting 6.5 /7 hours of sleep, not sure what to do about that. I fall asleep around 11/11:30 and then wake up at 5:30 or so and can't get back to sleep.

@KalinaM do you struggle with this at all?

Ohmygoodness, so much yes! I can totally feel this. My husband and I work completely opposite schedules so that one of us is home with the kids. So we VERY RARELY have alone time, or time at all together! I'm lucky if I sleep 11pm- 6am and that's IF my kids don't wake up scared, sick, wet, etc. Not ideal, I know, but I'm not sure what else to do honestly!

    ***TMI warning***

Good news for me!! I believe my couple days of stomach upset and bloat are totally to blame on my cycle starting! Once the flo began, I almost felt instantly deflated from the bloating (I mean, really, I could tell it was subsiding quickly) and my stomach issues disappeared, too! HOORAY! It stared 3 days earlier than expected this month ,which isn't totally out of the ordinary, but it did catch me by surprise. Anyway, I think my body uses my cycle for detox when I'm doing whole30, because this has happened in past rounds as well. So, the REALLY GOOD NEWS for me is that I'm finally feeling over the hump! Not great yet, because of my cycle, but trending upward. And I'm not fearing I might have FODMAP sensitivities anymore. Woot!

In reading through all of these today, it seems many of us are hitting a deeper level of healing. I'm still not feeling great but stubbornly hanging in there. I do like the feeling of nourishment. But starting to add more fresh veggies vs. roasted and less meat. I think I just need a lighter version. So experimenting with more shrimp and sauces etc. Plus, it's freezing and raining - work outs are harder. I do everything outside vs. a gym. A long bucolic walk would help right now. And I'm looking into FODMAP elimination Shiela. And gut issue education. Sending you all good energy. Hang in there.

If you need a good shrimp recipe recommendation, I made this recipe yesterday for dinner and it was DELICIOUS! https://whatgreatgrandmaate.com/paleo-shrimp-pad-thai/ Even my husband said we could make it again and he's very picky about his pad thai! (I couldn't find compliant fish sauce, so just used extra coconut aminos for the recipe)

  19. Downhill slope!! Woohoo! Although, I'm feeling kind of discouraged. The past two days I've had slight digestive/bathroom issues in the morning and bloating at night. Something I'm eating? Still getting over illness? PMS because my cycle is near? Who knows. I may end up extending this to a whole45 if things don't turn around in the next day or so. And I may end up looking into FODMAPS for that extra 15 if needed. Sigh-- so discouraged because of that.

My mind is very clear, once I manage to fall asleep, I sleep soundly and cravings have definitely gone away. So hooray for NSV!!

How is everyone else doing at day 16?

@KalinaM the kids are having pizza and I’m making wings for movie night. So excited!

OOOOO--- how'd they turn out?? We did pizza/wing night as well. And my daughter kept stealing my potato wedges and my husband kept stealing my kale chips I made! So my meal was good, too! And the wings go so well in that primal kitchen buffalo sauce.

I highly recommend the following blogs for recipe ideas - these are some of my go-tos. Most have Whole30 specific recipe sections.

    https://meljoulwan.com/

    https://nomnompaleo.com/

    https://www.paleorunningmomma.com/

    https://wholefoodfor7.com/

These are all tried and true go to websites for me too! I also found recently what will become a tried and true website in https://whatgreatgrandmaate.com/  Lots of whole30 options there as well.

I've had a virus since Tuesday night. I'm feeling much much better, but still have a cough and congestion. Thursday was absolutely miserable for me. I made homemade chicken soup (totally compliant) and ate that all day Thursday. Didn't bother with the meal template. Oh well. At least I stayed compliant.

Hopefully I will be feeling the effects of whole30 soon! I still just feel sick. Blah. Bad timing (as if there's a "good" time for a cold?) Anyway. I really hope that Tiger Blood is in the near future. I'm kind of feeling discouraged with everything since I do feel so yucky. But I will keep going because I don't want the last two weeks to be for nothing!

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

  21. I'll try to catch up on replies in a day or so. Just wanted to pop in to share that so far day ten is truly the hardest day!! I caught whatever virus my daughter got earlier this week and I'm so miserable! And just want to eat junk. I'm staying compliant but oh this is miserable.
