Positive ANA - should I be worried?

Recommended Posts

Hi ..

I'm wondering if anyone might have some experience or knowledge on positive ANA (anti-nuclear antibody) tests.

I've been refered to a specialist for additional testing as it was just a general test my Family Dr did... but I'm a bit shaken and not sure if I should be really worried... or if it could in fact turn out to be fine??

Funnily enough I have actually been following the autoimmune protocol with my Whole30 because I just thought the way I was feeling may be improved by also adopting the additional eliminations! I guess I knew my body pretty well :)

WholeHearted-

About four years ago when I saw my doctor for general tiredness and muscle aches, I had a positive ANA titer come back on bloodwork. My doctor sent me to a specialist also, thinking I had lupus. I was freaking out. The specialist tested me for lupus antibodies or something like that and said I didn't have it. After much poking and prodding, he decided that I had fibromyalgia. He prescribed a medicine called Gabapentin(?), which is an anti-seizure drug. I took one look at the side effects of that medicine and said NOOO WAY. I never took it.

I saw my OB/GYN a few months later and mentioned the fatigue and muscle aches. She tested my Vitamin D, which was around 20!! I started a supplement and I've had no random muscle aches since then.

Oh, and I've never had another ANA titer come back positive since then. Lab error? Body healed itself? I guess I'll never know! Anyway, it could easily be nothing. I'd actually ask for repeat bloods before seeing the specialist, given my experience.
