Whole30 with osteoporosis supplements and amenorrhea

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am starting another whole 30 on February 1st.  It will be my second go round.  I have found myself dabbling a little too much in the Paleo treats and need a reset!

To make a long story short, yesterday I found out that I have 2 stress fractures in my sacrum, severe osteoporosis in my spine and hip, and osteopenia in my femoral neck.  I am only 31 years old.  I know this is due to the last 4 years of anorexia, overexercise, and being amenorrheaic.  My doctor told me my spine is like that of a 70 year old right now.

My doctor is hesitant to put me on Fosamax yet (thankfully) and wants me on calcium and Vitamin D supplements immediately to see if I can reverse some of the bone damage.  I am also having to rework my diet to include more fats in order to bring my bf% up and restart my hormones.

I was wondering if there are any recommended brands of calcium and vitamin D supplements for the whole30 or if I should just do my best since it is medically necessary as far as the other ingredients go. Any recommendations as far as vegetables that contain more calcium that I may have overlooked (I know most all the leafy greens are recommended).

Also, I was wondering if I should change the meal planning template guidelines in this case to include more fats or proteins since I am trying to bring up my bf% and stimulate my hormones.

Any input would be appreciated!  This was definitely a huge wake up call for me in how NOT to treat your body for the sake of vanity.  Hopefully this second whole30 will put me in the right mindset to set things straight once again!!

Thanks in advance!

Ashley

I'm not sure on recommendations for supplements as I personally try to avoid them. This article might help you though: http://whole9life.com/2010/09/supplements-part-ii/

This is a good article on calcium that might help: http://whole9life.com/2012/02/what-about-calcium/

For vitamin D get at least 15 minutes of sunlight a day on your skin (no sunscreen) and foods rich in vitamin D like pastured eggs and grassfed beef.

On the question of getting your bf% up I would advise eating as close to the upper end of the template as you can without stuffing yourself. This article might help as well: http://whole30.com/2013/12/keeping-weight-whole30/
