It's the evening of my second day and I'm both happy and headachy. Getting rid of my best friend aka my diet cola bottle is clearly having an effect :) Still, I'm happy that I found this programme and that I actually started it. I'm usually the girl who always plans to start things tomorrow and then again tomorrow..

My portion sizes on my six meals so far have been too big, but since my eating habits in the past have been terrible and I've got about 60 pounds extra to carry around because of it, I've been cutting them down slowly every meal. And I haven't been snacking, so that's something.

The email that I got from whole30 yesterday couldn't have been more helpful. Today was the first actually warm day we've had in Finland all summer (it snowed last week...) and I was out with my friends eating my chicken salad while they were having ciders and cake. I just kept running the motivating email in my head and kept going. I had a great day and though now tired, I feel good about making it through day two.. Let's see what challenges tomorrow brings :)

Good luck to you!

I am curious about the number of meals you're eating. While multiple meals are not prohibited, the program encourages you to get to 3, at most 4 meals a day, as soon as you can for optimal digestive and hormonal rhythms. I.e., eating enough each meal to last you 4-5 hours.

(The short version of why this is recommended is that it's best if your body digests most of what you eat in a meal before filling up again. Eating multiple meals means you've barely begun to digest your last meal before the next influx of food come in and disrupts the digestive process.)

I know that if you are used to "grazing," it's hard to switch over to fewer meals (on top of the trauma of losing your best friend, diet cola!), so take the time you need. But do try to transition slowly to 3 meals a day.

Hi and thanks for the advice! I've been eating three meals per day, though yesterday I had an extra snack in a form of a pear. But since English is only something I learned at school, I sometimes write the funniest things.. :)

Today I'm aiming for the proper sized portions and I think I started of ok with two scrambled eggs in coconut oil, around 2dl of broccoli from the freezer on the pan, a fresh tomato, around ten olives and handfull of grapes. Not to mention water, which I'm trying to become friends with :)

Today I'm just trying to keep very busy and not think about food at all until my "it's time to cook" alarm goes off. No daydreaming about pizzas and burgers and .. oops! Back on track! Hope everyone has a great day!

Do you have a copy of the recommended meal template? That will help you with portions.

When eggs are your protein, the serving size is the number of eggs you can hold in one hand. For most folks, that's at least 3-4.

When olives are your fat, the serving size is 1-2 open (heaping) handfuls.

Aim for 1-3 cups of vegetables per meal. Fruit is optional: when you have it, the serving size is a whole piece of fruit the size of your fist.

Overall, focus on satiety.  You want to create meals that satiate you for 4-5 hours. You should feel comfortably full at the end of each meal: not overstuffed or underfed.

Hi and thank you for the great advice! This will help me along!

I read the template now and have a few questions:

When I cook something in coconut butter or olive oil, do I also eat olives/avocado/cashew nuts etc. for the amount on the template?

Do I eat less vegetables when I eat a fruit?

Does a 'cup' equal about 2dl ? I've been looking online, only to learn there are about 5 different measurements for cups around the world :)

Thanks again!

Let me try to answer your questions.

When you saute something, account for the fact that much of the cooking fat stays behind in the pan.  You want consume 1-2 fat servings per meal.

Don't let fruit push vegetables off your plate.  Vegetables take priority over fruit, as they tend to have more nutrients. Get the 1-3 cups of vegetables in before having a fruit.

Don't overthink it on the cup vs. dl. The idea is to fill your plate with vegetables after placing 1-2 palms of protein on the plate.  If some type of guidance helps, make a fist, make sure you have at least 1-3 fist sizes of vegetables at every meal.

Usually the fat you cook with stays in the pan, so add additional fat to make sure you're satiated. (If there's visible cooking fat in the pan I'll sometimes pour that over my veggies or protein).

Yes 2 dl is about a cup.

Fruit isn't to push veggies off your plate, so what you've been doing is good.

This is great, thank you so much for your answers! I think I got a much better grasp on it now! I've been too skimpy with my fats (never thought I'd say that in my life.. ) so I'm off avocado-shopping!

On another note, my headache is still on and off, but I slept about 10 hours last night. So yay to my new colaless life! So the off switch works, now I only need to locate the on switch when it's time to wake up and try not yawn through the day :)

It's funny that I actually have to really think about what to do with my free time now that I'm not eating as I used to nor drinking. Eating for comfort at home and socialising over lunces in restaurants or having take away has been such a big part of my life. Tomorrow, instead of eating out, I'm making lunch for my sisters and then we're going for a walk. I think this is still fairly easy, because I'm still excited and the people in my life are curious about this. I'm more worried what happens when I run out off the 'it's new and fun'-phase and my friends get bored and fall back to their regular rutines. That's when I need to be strong.

But now, my alarm is ringing and carrots await to be peeled :)

I've been so ridiculously sleepy today, but I made it to the end :) Hoping for more energy tomorrow and trying to start the morning with a bit of excercise. I'm also starting to look more into making sauces and dips tomorrow, as I feel I need something to make my meals more tasty.

The idea about treating your cravings as a tantrum by your brain has actually been really helpful. Working with kids, I'm used to tantrums and I manage to stay fairly calm and don't give in. But when it's me inside my own head screaming and kicking for an ice cream I tend to cave. It's time for some tough love for my body and brain :)

Yesterday I had an evening of "why the ### am I putting myself through this, this is complite ###" and I came really close to giving up. I burned my dinner, I had a hard time explaning this to one of my friends and even though I felt better and I excercised in the morning and I had fallen back to exhaustion again..

So I sat there fuming and ate a big pile of cherries for my sugar craving... Luckily there was nothing else sweet in the house, because I think I would have eaten everything and anything. I even walked to the store not really knowing whether I was going to buy sweet potatos or sweets. And then, behold, on the shelf there was French's yellow mustard with no added sugar! I had been looking all over for this with no luck and now there it was! For some reason that was just what I needed, the light at the end of the tunnel... I shouted yes, grapped the mustard (scared some other customers) and came home smiling. Never knew I liked mustard that much :)

This morning I'm feeling better, really good actually and hopefully better prepared if an energy slump hits me later today. I've been sleeping better and what feels like deeper and see really nice dreams as well (mostly about Charlie Hunnam..) I'm definately telling that to my doubtful friend!

So we weren't the only ones with the smoke alarm going off last night.  I'm go glad to hear you're feeling better.  This morning is my official day two.  I'm still on the hunt for the elusive sugar free bacon.  I hope your day goes well, don't give up.  I'm right behind you.

Definately not alone! Thanks for the cheer, this whole day has been so much better, I actually feel like a humanbeing again. I hope your day is going great too!

Have you done this many times before? And if yes, how often? I think this could be a great thing to do with friends or colleagues maybe once a year or so. (After one good day I'm already planning ahead, though tomorrow I might be screaming in supermarket again, will see ;) )

Have a good day two and all the best for your day three!

Seven days in the bag! I'm both surprised and really happy :)

But I can't just start taking it easy, because I'm hanging out at a dance festival the next couple of days and sleeping in a cottage. So lots of excercise in the form of happily jumping around, but also a lot of people eating and drinking around me and pretty primitive cooking possibilities too. I've planned and shopped and planned some more, but there might still be somethings that are hard to predict.

I'm glad days six and seven have been more energetic and I feel really good, so it's easier to tell myself (and others) why exactly am I doing this and keeping in mind my goals. I even wrote my goals down to have in my pocket the next couple of days.

So I hope everything goes well and I hope everyone has a great weekend!

It's the evening of day 12 for me and the last couple of days have been great!

I've been pretty much on the move from a festival to a cabin to friend's house and I'm still not home, but with planning and preparing lots of foods in the mornings I'm doing much better than I expected. I think most of it has to do with my friends who have been really supportive and understanding of my new eating habits. They've also noticed that I'm more upbeat and more enthusiastic and I even had the energy to dance five hours for two nights :)

Now the goal is to excercise more and when I finally get home at the end of the week learn more interesting recipes!
