fish skin

I buy smoked mackerel (mackerel, salt, pepper) and fresh whole fish when they are a good price. Both are wild caught. I was wondering if it is recommended to eat or ditch the fish skin, or is it just personal preference? I haven't been eating it because I read that it is where toxins are stored, but thought I should get an outside opinion. Thanks in advance!
