Bad legume reaction surprised me

Recommended Posts

I honestly thought reintroducing legumes would be a breeze. I'm now on day 4 of reintro, which was scheduled to be my non-gluten grains day, but I've pushed that back in order to feel better after legume day.

Day 1 I had a little bit of peanut butter on an apple with my normal W30 breakfast; a scoop of hummus in my side salad at lunch; and bean and cauli-rice bowls at dinner. It was about a half can of black beans, and I'm leaning toward believe that's what did me in.

Day 2 I felt okay, but day 3 is when it hit. All day long I had a stomachache and felt nauseated. I thought it could have been due to PMS (because I have experienced nausea during PMS before, not often, but it's happened), but when it lasted all day I knew it had to be the legumes. The odd part was the increase in mucus in my throat - the post nasal drip definitely doesn't seem related to PMS, but I've heard that legumes are high mucus-producing foods. Come to think of it, I used to need tissues all the time before W30, and it wasn't until yesterday that I realized I'd run out and hadn't bought more because I didn't need them as often.

It's continued to today, day 4. My stomach continues making gurgling sounds and it just feels icky. Every once and awhile I get a wave of nausea, but it's mainly the stomach ache. I did not have a BM yesterday or the day before, but I did today and it seemed to be normal, so hopefully this is moving through my system.

I plan to eventually re-test hummus because I do enjoy it from time to time, but if this is how legumes affect my body, I plan to avoid them as much as possible. I'm honestly surprised by this reaction! Has anyone else had surprisingly strong reactions to legumes?

Yes! the same thing happened to my husband and I. (I didn't even try peanuts, even though I LOVE peanut butter, because it would make me a bit nauseas and bloated before W30, so I didn't even want to mess with it on day one of reintroduction) We had some beans and/or hummus at each meal and both felt super bloated (and constipated, ugh the worst!) for like a full 2 days after. I was really surprised also.  We both love hummus and unlikely we'll totally give that up, so-like you said- might try to reintroduce that again in moderation at some point.

Same for me! I really didn't expect legumes to be a problem but after reintro on day 31 (a couple of forkfuls of baked beans, a tbsp of peanut butter and a small pile of peas) I felt shocking when I woke up on day 32.  ALL of my joints ached (down to my knuckles) and I was sluggish and headachey all day. I also had stomach cramps (I had bad IBS before starting) on and off all day.

No more legumes for me!

We've pushed back our non gluten grains intro until Monday (but mostly because DH is going camping overnight so won't be home).

If lectin levels are the reason for the strong legume reaction, some products are worse than others. Soaking, rinsing and cooking the old fashioned way reduces lectin levels. Hummus is sometimes made now without rinsing and with different cooking methods (leading to higher lectin levels), so making your own would be a good test of tolerance levels.

Raw peanuts can be higher in some irritants than cooked ones, but some people can't tolerate any (peanuts can have a kind of mould on them which even dead causes some people problems).
