My second Whole30

Looks like you are really doing well.  Hope you are starting to feel great at this point!

To be honest, I'm not doing so hot. I've been having a few digestive issues the past couple of days. Its just like neverending! I think I know what causes it but then its something else, and something else. Some days I just wish I could stop eating altogether.

Emily, I'm sorry to hear you are still having digestive issues.  I'm the same, it seems very up and down.  I'm definitely better during the week when I'm "on schedule".  But I can't quite find the right protocol to keep things right all the time.  It is so frustrating, I know!

Day 12

Breakfast - Skillet hash of sweet potatoes, red peppers, red onions, and chorizo with salsa, an apple, black tea, water

Lunch - Day 1 of Whole30 lunch club! Three others in my office are doing a whole30 and we agreed to each cook one day this week and bring in food to share. Today we had Melissa Joulwan's chocolate chili with onions and a mixed green salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing

Dinner - Gai pad kaprow (thai basil chicken) with cauliflower rice, half bottle of kombucha

Whole30 lunch club sounds awesome.  What are you taking in?

Its pretty rad. I am very happy and lucky that I have so many people doing it at my office!

Today we had a huge event on my team and I was in charge of catering, which was pretty brutal. I was surrounded by sandwiches, pasta salad, brownies, cookies, diet coke...BRUTAL. I also had to cut the brownies in half and got chocolate goo all over my hands and HAD TO WASH IT OFF INSTEAD OF EAT IT. That was an incredible amount of willpower if I do say so myself.

Day 13

Breakfast - Skillet hash of sweet potatoes, red peppers, red onions, and chorizo with salsa, avocado, black tea, water

Lunch - Day 2 of Whole30 lunch club! Caribbean curry (chicken, mango, pepper, spinach, onion, & spices) with a big mixed green salad

Dinner - "Italian Omelette" - three eggs with peppers, onions, tomatoes, zucchini, and bacon

I so hear you.  On Sunday my son wanted to make brownies, so I ended up making him a tiny chocolate cake (baked in a can).  When I was mixing it, I came so close to almost sticking the spoon in my mouth.  Really, it was a thoughtless thing, but it was super close.  I've had the same issue when making PB&J and not licking the jelly off the knife.

How's digestion going?

How's digestion going?

Honestly, horrible. I don't know whats going on. Sunday I was a mess (won't go into details but I think I drank too much Kombucha too fast) but I haven't gone to the bathroom since then. My stomach feels distended, bloated, and full, and I am super uncomfortable. I'm plenty hydrated, drinking tons of bone broth, eating plenty of probiotic foods, eating plenty of both raw and cooked vegetables. I get enough sleep. I'm following the meal template. I am exercising daily.

Its clearly something messed up in my gut (still) and I cannot figure it out. I'm not going to lie, I'm angry and stressed and irritated by this. There is (once again) no pattern or order to my problems. This is what happened the last Whole30 and it ended when the 30 days ended.

I've been reacting terribly to tomatoes recently (cooked, not raw) and wonder if that could have an impact but its like - EVERY DAY SOMETHING ELSE. if its not tomatoes its kombucha. If its not kombucha its too much fat/oil in my short ribs (is that even a thing? or is that just me? I always get a stomach ache and other problems when I eat super oily/rich foods). The point is: Whole30 or not, it never ends.

I wish I had some words of wisdom for you, but you know I am having the same battles.  Hang in there, I know it is frustrating and frankly, uncomfortable.  One thing I've noticed, is that a week out from getting my period, things go down hill for about a week.   What's up with that?

Day 14 - Feeling worse and worse every day. @Sara, I know what you mean about your period, but mines a ways away!

I am considering going off of the whole30 and trying the low FODMAP or autoimmune protocol for the last two weeks. (I would still follow the template but be less concerned about small amounts of added sugar.) My symptoms are getting worse which indicates to me a leaky gut problem which I understand can be improved with the AIP.

Breakfast - Skillet hash of sweet potatoes, red peppers, red onions, and chorizo, avocado, black tea, water

Lunch - Day 3 of Whole30 lunch club! Greek Beef Stew with a spinach and tomato salad

Dinner - Carrots and baba ghannoush, sauteed skillet of peppers, onions, tomatoes, zucchini, and bacon, and a larabar

Day 15

Breakfast - Skillet hash of sweet potatoes, red peppers, red onions, and chorizo, water

Lunch - Day 4 of Whole30 lunch club! Korean beef short ribs with mixed green salad with a sesame ginger dressing

Dinner - Carrots and baba ghannoush, tuna salad (tuna, mayo, red peppers, scallions, jalapenos)

Well, you've done a W30 before and know your results from that.  You know that this W30 seems to be going the same.  So trying something new makes sense to me.  You are already restricting right now, so maybe restricting in a different way for the last two weeks makes sense.  Do you think you would go off FODMAPs or go with the AIP.  You know I would be following your progress closely!

I feel your frustration. I've had a lot of IBS type symptoms. Horrific gas, bloating, constipation etc....not to get tmi...Ive kept a food log on and off for  years, though I am on day 23 of my first W30.

I knew from past experimentation that I had issues with some dairy, soy and the brassica family--cabbage, broc, cauli, brussles etc. Now that Ive been doing the W30 Ive noticed that avocado and coconut give me issues too..but like you said not all the time.

In the last three weeks Ive had three horrible bouts of bloating. I mean SO bad I wanted to die I felt 6 months pregnant. The one common thread in all three meals was avocado. BUT! Ive had avocado at tons of meals and did not bloat.  One of the bloated meals was very oily (carnitas)

I've done dairy experiments (pre W30) and had the same result....yogurt is ok. Ice cream sometimes kills me (running to the bathroom within 5 minutes) and sometimes...ice cream is ok. Cheese is hit or miss!!! I used to put cream in my coffee ever day--no issue with that. Was it because it was  such a small amount? Or because I always used organic half and half?

Today I had chicken and artichoke sausage and I've been burping all day...was it the artichokes (fodmap)? It was pretty greasy sausage however.

Things are better for sure, but still not 'perfect'.

I am considering doing low fodmap, but that is hard. I love those veggies!! Espcially cauli, beets, fennel, artichoke. I REFUSE to do AI.  I love nightshades. My mom has a huge tomato garden every year--never had a problem there. Whew.   I like baba ganoush too!!! sigh :(

This article might be a good read for you if you have not seen it before: http://www.primalpalate.com/blog/how-to-heal-leaky-gut/

His biggest recommendation is to see a doctor that can diagnose you and help you. I really hope you find relief soon. You might be right that W30 isn't the best for you right now but again urge you to see a diagnosis to know for sure.

I have looked through that before, as well as a lot of the posts by paleo mom regarding leaky gut and autoimmune conditions. Honestly I been trying without success to find a doctor that can help me. The GI specialists do not listen. They tell me to eat fiber, or to eat more yogurt. One of them wrote me a script for metamucil. I have gone to four GI doctors in the past year and its always the same. One had me get a lactulose hydrogen breath test, and when the results showed nothing he said I should try drinking laxative tea.

I went to a naturopath once, who severely criticized paleo eating and pushed me to eat less meat and more grains. She ordered thousands of dollars of allergy testing, none of which would be covered by insurance. I desperately want to get a stool test, but they are several hundred dollars and without an order from a doctor, its not covered by my insurance.

Seriously I have no idea what to do. I feel like I am flailing in the dark. I cannot do this by myself but I cannot find the help I need.

Have you tried this to find a doctor that will work within your desire to stay Paleo?

http://paleophysiciansnetwork.com/

I keep meaning to search for a doctor there as it has been way too long since I've been to one.

Yes I have...in my vicinity there are three doctors listed, but they are all chiropractors...so I am not sure that is relevant.

Hrm. I'm not super good at this myself. Do you have to pay to "interview" a doctor? I'm not sure. I just know that getting a diagnosis would help. I do believe that Bill (the guy that wrote the article) lives in PA somewhere so perhaps you can reach out to them about what doctor he worked with and perhaps that could help get a more local referral or might be worth the drive up there to see someone you know will work with you.

I'm not sure what I am going to do on the doctor front. I might just keep going to each of my GI's until one of them gives me the tests I need.

Moving on though, to day 16 - which will be my last post in this forum for now. I'll get to that shortly.

Breakfast - Skillet hash of chorizo, peppers, onions, sweet potatoes, avocado

Lunch - Sweetgreen salad with greens, chicken, sweet potato, onion, apple, beets

Dinner - Applesauce, cherry larabar, coconut water

So I have been pretty constipated for the better part of my whole30, and by Wednesday night I was beyond miserable. I took some Natural Calm as well as drank a lot of Kombucha and took an aloe vera supplement. Combined the three things gave me horrible diarrhea for the past two days. Every thing I ate or drank resulted in immediate stomach cramping and running to the bathroom.

It took all I had to not get some toast or rice (per the BRAT diet) and so I ultimately went with what looked good - applesauce, a cherry larabar, and a bottle of coconut water.

Though I should not have done all three of those things, I can only say that I was desperate and miserable. I have never in my life experienced constipation before the whole30. My problems have always been gas and bloating. But my first whole30 in August this happened (and I did the same thing - probiotics and natural calm - and had the same reaction). I thought it was my body adjusting to all of the fiber I was eating, but I have been eating that much fiber for six months now. Yet once again, a couple of weeks in, constipation is back. It does not make sense. And it still does not address my other issues of bloating and gas.

So I am going off the whole30 and onto the autoimmune protocol diet for the next week or so. Still not dairy, soy, grains, or legumes, but now I'll avoid nightshades and eggs and nuts/seeds, too. I'm not going to blog about it here anymore because I will be eating trace amounts of sugar in my foods. I am really hopeful this will help me better identify what is going on.

Oh, Emily!  I'm so frustrated for you.  What a horrible experience.  I know I was never quite as constipated as I was on the W30.

I think your decision sounds like a good one for you.  Will you be logging back in the post section?  I hope so!
