Hi gang!

Thanks for your kind words and for sharing your experiences. It's good to know you are all here. I read the day 15 email and he point that resonated most with me was the part about rewarding ourselves with food. How true that had become for me! I'd also found myself eating mountains of popcorn when I was sad, alone and watching TV. I can't figure out exactly what I was consoling that demanded popcorn but it's a puzzle I am determined to ID. I think it could be a breakthrough I need to change my relationship with food...

Hope all is well with you all. It's a beautiful day in NY, headed out for a walk :)

Jamie, you wouldn't happen to be a teacher, would you?! I am - get paid once a month, and -FINALLY- got my check yesterday too. Hallelujah!! :)

That's funny! I was a teacher for 15 years and for many of those years I was paid once a month, also. What a STRETCH on a teacher's salary, eh? I thought we might starve my first year because we started work early in August but didn't get paid until the end of September!! Lord knows what I fed my family that month...

Today I'm an instructional designer and still get paid once a month, but it's not quite the stretch it used to be on the teacher's salary. Sad that teachers should have to stretch their food dollars so much when they are the ones who need to be in optimal health to handle such a challenging workload - and to fend off all the school related germs!

High praise to teachers eating right! :)

No, but I work for the State of Wyoming....  :-)  Once a month is good for 99% of my life and bad for the 1% at the end in a month where I've had too many extra expenses...    :P

Day 18...I actually had to think about what day we were on today! Nice to read the reflections posted. I'm still enjoying my cauliflower rice discovery. Today I mixed it half and half with unsweetened shredded coconut, and then sautéed it with veggies, garlic, and curry. Had it on top of mixed greens...so good. I still want to try the shredded zucchini as a swap out for pasta or grain. That sounds like a promising switch too...

I've been sautéing with a mix of olive oil and ghee, or just one or the other. Still not sure about coconut oil for me, so I'm holding off for the moment.

I'm about to make the recipe posted for whole 30's favorite mayo...

Hi everyone just wanted to let you know I'm proud of you for sticking this out. Unfortunately I fell off the whole 30 wagon! Going out of town not very prepared did not help! I knew there were many hurdles coming up and I think I might've purposely sabotaged it ("sure il have a glass of Pinot Grigio and some garlic nan,") Honestly I picked the worst time to start this- two celebrations and my birthday ...now I can actually drink a glass of wine on my birthday! I'm still back to eating Paleo but look forward to a cheat day on my bday next week. The good news is my husband will start whole 30 with me in September yay! looking forward to going all the way and having him take the journey with me. Good luck everyone!

Penelope - sounds like you've had some great practice for your next Whole30!Good luck to you and the hubby for September.

I'm feeling so much better today, because the wind gods turned down their efforts last night and I could finally get some sleep! We've had a very mild winter so far in my city until Tuesday, when it all apparently came at once in the form of a multi-day storm: wind, rain, cold and snow on the mountain, the first proper one for the year. Its not unusual to have a good dumping at Easter, so this year's is particularly late. But all the wind had been severely interfering with my sleep. And I'm not a happy puppy without my sleep. Even a little less throws me right off.

Now I haven't been able to tell if I've hit tiger blood because of the cranky-bitch-face issues from not sleeping properly, but my arms and legs have been holding on to muscle really well, even though last night was the first time I've exercised (purposefully for an hour, I get incidental in daily). Perhaps a sign? I found during my last Whole30 that my using my muscles was easier and I was able to up the intensity without knowing.

Glad to help! I'm completely hopeless without enough sleep, one of my biggest learnings over the last few years. I'm really glad to be in a place where I go with it (i.e bunker down with a cuppa or take a nap instead of plotting new and destructive ways to hurt people because they were too chipper ;) ). Makes life much easier to deal with.

Jenn2011 - you'll be fine! Focus on the fun of camping and don't stress too much about what you can't eat. Just eat what you have that is compliant and get through it - it's just food, afterall. Enjoy!!

TGIF everyone! Weekends are hard, but they're getting easier as we learn new tricks - right?

Hi everyone,

Just made zucchini-sweet potato cakes. Pretty darn good.

Can't say I'm feeling the tiger blood yet myself, but seeing little signs of how good this whole 30 is for me all the time. Allergies are definitely improving, which leads to a better sleep (Jenna-I can relate!). Aches in my joints are less too. And there really was a day when it was like a switch turned off on craving snacks so much...That chemical switch, I'm happy to say, is steadily remaining off...

I smiled at Penelope's entry about a glass of wine. That's been the one thing my husband decided not to get on board with too! It's different if you have your reasons, like I do, for doing this, and just being a supportive spouse, who likes to share food, and cooking together. Even after whole 30, I do think I'll be saying no to a cocktail more than I used too...I'm quite happy with a pretty glass of club soda that has no side affects!

Hey everyone! Here we are, half way through day 19! I'm feeling great and noticing my clothes fitting looser, sleeping well, having more energy for exercise and generally feeling more organized and goal oriented throughout my days.

But I have to say as we get closer to the prized "30," I am finding myself counting the days -- even the hours -- until this challenge is over and I can enjoy a glass of wine on a Friday after work again, or go to my breakfast place on Sunday morning and order a cheese omelette with a english muffin on the site.

Can others relate? Is this a bad mindset?

Lobo - its quite normal to have a motivation slump around day 20, so you're on the mark! An "eh, what am I doing this for, I'm bored"  kind of a thing, and wanting it to be over, pronto.

Me? I had returned to a viable sleep routine! Woohoo! But the food dreams are back. Last night it was croutons, crackers and bread. I haven't eaten grains or gluten in about 18 months and they have a horrible, immediate and chronic effect on my body, eating them isn't an option for me at all! I don't miss it and don't want it! Gah! Crazy brain! Oddly, it was also at my high school. Apparently it was a dream for long-gone things.

Day 20...  the second time around seems much easier so for any of you that think you might consider another whole30; it really is easier the second time.

I'm 1/3 of the way through whole60.  Not sure if I am losing weight; I really didn't last time but I think I have finally worked up the courage to try CrossFit.  I don't want to go alone; but I don't know anyone that wants to go with me.  Silly, 43 year old woman is chicken to try CrossFit alone....   Nice headline.   :P   Anyone in this group ever tried it?  Doing it?

Thanks,

Jamie

Jamie - I'd agree, if you haven't gone so far off road you've joined the circus. So to speak. It is definitely easier for me this time round too.

I'm not a crossfitter, but my second barre class scared me (because 2nd time around I knew what was coming and boy is it tough ;) ). Good luck, I'm sure you'll do fine! One of the CF boxes in my city has people come and do a fully coached intro class so its much less pressure for your first one and you get someone to coach you through the moves, posture and where your ideal starting point is. Does your local box do a similar thing?

Another problem with living in a small town -- not may choices between gyms or specialty gyms like crossfit.  We have two choices; one has no mention of beginner level or one-on-one coaching -- so I am avoiding them like the plague.  The other one is more well established and conducts 30 minute basics classes which are designed to have a person learn the proper techniques before jumping into a "regular" class.  I know that technique is critical -- I was a competitive gymnast for about 5 years and I used to coach gymnastics as well.  I can teach people to do things like a back handspring -- but without proper technique the person can hurt themselves very easily.

This crossfit gym gives the first week free -- so I will go on Monday.  There, I said it.  Now I have to go!  :-)

I was thinking today about how I would love to have some honey, again, in my coffee when the W30 is over and I wondered if I would really do it after not having it for 30 days and surviving just fine. Having been Paleo almost a year now, I know that when I add back those non-compliant foods, I don't feel good so that kinda kills the fun of cheating. I also don't like to take a step forward in my health just to take a step backwards over having cheese or something.

So, I'm sure it's completely rational to fantasize about what we're going to be able to have after the program is over, but we should ask ourselves about the cost-benefit ratio related to going back to our pre-W30 foods.

Good for you! I am sure you'll be fine going all by yourself and maybe even make new friends - or find friends already there that you didn't expect to see ;) (I too live in a small town - can't not see someone I know!). Report back on how it goes. :)

Jamie- you should totally try CrossFit! Don't be intimidated, all the workouts are scalable and - if the box owner is any good- he/she will introduce you to folks and explain the on ramp process. I love it! It's such a good workout and it helps develop mental toughness - that part has helped me throughout this process. Feel free to drop me a line if you've got more questions or concerns :)

Day 20...been trodding along...and today I made my very own dressing for the first time! (I know...I'm a little late to the party!)...an orange vinaigrette and it turned out great! I had a tasty salad for dinner with lettuce, strawberries, almonds, and chicken. I've already packed a salad for my lunch tomorrow at work.

Just wanted to share a non-scale victory. Not many people in my life would understand! I'm currently at a conference and first, I'm very happy that I've been able to stick to the Whole30. It's been hard turning down all the treats offered but I really want to stay on track. Second, a group of us decided to go on a morning swim and I felt great in my bathing suit. I rarely feel confident when swimming and today I didn't feel self conscious at all. It's great encouragement to keep going until the end.

I'm headed to breakfast now, which will be continental, so I think I'll end up going to a restaurant instead. I need some protein!

Keep at it everyone!!

Becky

Oh my.

Sleep is one of the 9 factors for a reason, and in all honesty, for me, I'm pretty sure I could get rid of the socialisation one and have sleep be two of the factors (yep, I'm introverted).

I mentioned last week we'd had some pretty full on storms where I live and the wind had disrupted my sleep. The last really bad night of that was last Wednesday. Its not Monday morning here and I'm still exhausted! I've been napping each afternoon. Last night I feel asleep for an hour while our roast was on, woke up to eat, then went promptly back to sleep on the couch!

I pretty much got nothing done on the days I've just had away from work (all 4 of them!), just bumbled around in a sleepy haze. And nope, there's nothing else wrong with me, I just need my sleep. All of it, and every night.

My husband made Beasty BBQ sauce recipe (sent to us in one of our emails), along with chicken. Such a yummy recipe....

For some reason, the last two days I've woken up very achy....can't put a finger on why. My only two thoughts are, eating out, and red meat. I ate out yesterday, but told the waitress about my restrictions, so I don't think that would be it. I did have red meat three days in a row, all whole 30 approved, but maybe I'll have to watch just how much, and how often, I eat red meat....(?)It's a bummer to wake up to stiff. It still a surprise to me. I really thought it was part of a virus I had this spring, or possibly Lyme, but neither is the case.

Anyway, congrats on three weeks down, everyone! Living a 'whole' life...
