AmyJ's Whole30 Journey - Beginning December 8, 2014

Welcome to my Whole30 log.  I just heard about the program for the first time a few days ago, and I have been reading up on it since then.  I have decided to go for it.

Today was my Dad's birthday.  I went to see his brand new headstone for the first time and thought about how much I need a change in my life so I don't end up in a grave at 61 like he did.  He passed away in August from lung cancer after a lifetime of unhealthy choices.

It's taken me couple months since then to decide on a direction to take to change my life.  Sometimes you just get so wrapped up in the enormity of what you need to do that you get overwhelmed and indecisive and end up doing nothing.  I don't want to coast anymore.  I want to be healthy.  I want to reverse my insulin resistance. I want to lose weight. I want to have children and be a good role model.  I don't want my children to bury me before I'm 62.

And so, tonight I shall wave goodbye to my old lifestyle.  I cleared out the fridge, freezer and the cupboards yesterday and filled them up with good foods.  I have told family and friends that I am starting Whole30, to keep me accountable.  I cooked a bunch of meat ahead so there's no excuse for not having any, and I have done some meal planning so I know what I have to do.  I brought home my exercise bike that has been sitting in storage for three years and set it up.

Tomorrow, I will begin my Whole30 Journey, and all I have to do to keep motivated is go and see my Dad's shiny new headstone.

I am ready.

Thanks, Hutlifr.  I sure hope so...and I hope I see this through so I can be proud of myself, too!

This morning I did a pre-start weigh-in and took my measurements so after 30 days I can see what changes I see (if any).

Then I started my Whole30 Journey!

Day 1:
Breakfast: 2 eggs, scrambled with green pepper, onion, mushrooms, and spinach; topped with tomato and avocado.

Lunch: Salad of baby kale, baby spinach, mixed greens, peppers, mushrooms, onion, tomato and avocado; topped with grilled chicken breast

Snack: Fruit smoothie with a handful of nuts (I drank the smoothie before I discovered that smoothies are frowned upon...)

Supper: Stirfry with mushrooms, peppers, onion and steak, topped with raw tomato, lettuce, onion, and cucumber.  Tried and failed to make an egg wrap so had some scrambled eggs on the side. Pineapple.

Exercise: 10 minutes on the exercise bike...all I could manage today, but will increase daily.

Notes:  Too bad about the smoothie thing; I really like them.  But I guess that's kinda the point of restricting them even if they are Whole30 compliant.  Also trying to quit smoking while doing this so I foresee a rough week ahead.  24 hours with no cigarette, and I REALLY REALLY want one!!!  But I told my husband to hide my car keys so I couldn't go to the store to pick up more...seems to be working okay so far, though my poor husband was threatened when he got home from work...lol.  So one benefit of quitting smoking is that the craving for a smoke kind of overshadows any food craving I may have...at least so far.  I didn't find today too bad, though according to 'The Timeline' I'm in for a doozy of a headache tomorrow.  I did seem to have a bit more energy than usual today.  My brain kinda feels foggy though.  We'll see how long that lasts (it was there before I started W30).

Anyways, I'm off for tonight.  See you tomorrow!

Question:  Is it normal to feel completely alert and awake at 3am after your first day of Whole30?  Because I woke up and I was wide awake and couldn't get back to sleep for about an hour and a half, then tossed and turned the rest of the night.

And you know how I was complaining about a brain fog yesterday?  That seems to be gone, too.  Just wondering if that's typical this early in the program?  (Also, no headache this morning... :) )

Still no headache...not that I'm complaining!  I was just expecting one after reading the timeline.  I actually feel really good today - though I keep forgetting things.  Kind of strange.  Have been away much of today, so haven't had a chance to do exercise yet.

Day 2:

Breakfast: 2 eggs, scrambled with leftover steak, peppers mushrooms, and onions.  Pineapple.

Lunch: Salad with iceberg lettuce, mixed baby greens, tomato, pepper, onion, cucumber, roasted sunflower seeds, and chicken breast.  Third attempt at avocado dressing...not really great but passable.

Supper: Mixed veggies - cauliflower, broccoli, carrots; baked sweet potato with cinnamon and coconut oil; extremely yummy salmon cakes using this recipe: http://paleoly.com/paleo-salmon-cakes/

Congrats, TLaposi!  I know how hard it is to quit smoking, just because of numerous attempts I have never quit for more than a couple weeks.  If you had the willpower to quit smoking, I think you should be able to manage a 30 day diet reset no problem!

I don't know what other smokers have experienced when trying to quit during Whole30, but so far, my cravings for a cigarette have been very mild compared to  prior quit attempts.  And those cravings distract me from my food cravings, so the diet thing is pretty easy to manage thus far, too.

Are you going to start a log, too?  I am completely new to this, so I'm kind of muddling through...it would be nice to share the experience! :)

I feel you on the lose of a parent. My dad died when I was two and my mother passed 6 years ago at age 39. I just had my 29th birthday on nov 16. I decided I was going to be healthier and in better shape in my 30s then my 20s. Also doing this for my family. Want to be there for them longer than my mom was here for me. I quite smoking on my birthday and eliminated the no no food groups a day at a time until my official start day for whole 30 which was nov. 21. Here I am day 19 and no cigarettes! No cheese cravings (I anticipated these would be the worst) I actually had my dreams of accidentally eating non compliant food and they were accidents in my dream and I freak out (chocolate and Carmel) go figure! I don't really struggle with the sugar dragon during the day, just In My Dreams! Lol! Anyhow, just wanted to let you know you are not alone in this and of you need to talk to someone, there is always someone here who gets it. Good Luck, Stay Strong, this is the Best Thing to do For YOURSELF! Be Selfish for your Future! You Got This! If I can do it with 4 kids 90% on board and a husband only on board for some dinners (so many temptations still in my home I have to ignore, look past, and overcome) Than anyone can do it!!

Awww...thanks for the encouragement and support, 85MotherOf4AK...And great job sticking with it!

I know what you mean, wanting to be healthier in your thirties - I am 31 years old, and I feel like I'm 80 some days.  Sounds like you have a lot of willpower and motivation!  I do, too...It is scary seeing a parent in a casket, and a strong motivator not to end the same way.  You and I are lucky, though - we realize we need a change and we have figured out the way to start doing it.

My biggest motivation at the moment is that I have fertility issues, and my husband and I have been trying for a couple years to have a baby.  I feel like if I don't get going soon I'm going to be too old to conceive a healthy baby.  But I am working through PCOS, and I have only one functioning fallopian tube since I had an ectopic pregnancy 6 years ago and have scar tissue blocking that one.  You are very lucky to have four kids!

I'm looking forward to the naughty food dreams...I think it will be quite entertaining...lol...Chocolate and carmel seems pretty tame compared to some of the weird food dreams I've read about on here...:P

Anyways, I am off to make some breakfast.  Thanks for your comments and encouragement!

I plan on starting a blog too after I officially start Dec 12th. I'm 42 I suffer with arthritis in all my joints and I hear ya i feel 80 sometimes too. My husband will support me but will not join me in this effort. I feel crazy starting right before Christmas , but I'm so tired of hurting I'm hoping I will feel better by Christmas and that will be sweeter than any pie! Keep going girl you can do it!

Just think of all the junk at Christmas that you won't be putting in your body. :)  But yeah, it will be the ultimate test of our resolve, won't it?

I'll have to check out your blog once you start. :)  And yes, I keep thinking, what do I want more, something non-compliant, or a baby?  Something non-compliant, or knees that aren't excruciatingly painful on stairs?  Something non-compliant, or all this extra weight?  It tends to curb my grazing...:P

Haha...Sounds like a good way to remind him to keep his mouth shut when he doesn't know what he's talking about!

Actually, my Ob/Gyn has told me to keep trying to get pregnant naturally, and that there's still a chance I may get pregnant without intervention from fertility specialists.  I am really hoping that the Whole30 will improve my odds, as my next step is Clomid, and I want to avoid hormones if I can...but at nearly 32yo and wanting 3 kids, I can't afford to wait much longer, in case I need in vitro or something that takes time.

Anywho, back to the subject at hand...lol.

It's the end of my third day, and I have to say, I feel absolutely fabulous.  No more brain fog, lots of energy, no headaches, I haven't wanted to kill anyone yet, and my cigarette cravings are still manageable.  It's been a good day.  Aside from the dental surgery I had today...but even that was okay; since I couldn't chew, I had one of my nomtastic compliant smoothies for lunch. :P

Day 3:

So, breakfast: 2 poached eggs on a leftover salmon patty, on kale and mushrooms and garlic sauteed in ghee.

Lunch: fruit/avocado smoothie with hemp hearts for protein  (I had to look that up to make sure it was compliant.)

Supper: Amazingly delicious lemon pepper tuna salad with avocado, celery, carrot and onion and a dash of cumin; overtop baby kale and mixed baby greens salad with onion, cucumber, tomato, celery.  OMG was this ever tasty!!!

Snack: Pear with a handful of sunflower seeds.

TLaposi: So, tomorrow's the big day!  Well, I hope your Whole30 starts out as smoothly as mine did - no headaches, no feeling cranky, nothing so far except feeling absolutely alert and healthier than I have in a good long while!  I'm excited to read your log...and if you ever do need some support, I'm new at this, but I'll support you through as best I can!

85MotherOf4AK: It's little victories like that that I think are more important than the scale.  I have read about people who don't lose any weight, or very little, but their body composition changes so much that they lose inches off their body.  I think if you see the number hasn't changed much you'll lose steam...and if it has, you might be tempted to cheat because your work is done... :P  Seeing the scale on Day 31 is one of the rewards, I think, so stay strong!

So, today there was no smiting of the things.  I got in a slight argument with the hubby, but he started it and I finished it...then he apologized and it was done...smart man...lol  Actually, he is a habitual Coca Cola drinker...I convinced him to stop drinking it cold turkey...said if I could quit smoking, he could quit his "Coke habit"...so he stopped two days ago, and I think HE wants to kill all the things...LOL

I'm starting to think the Timeline is completely wrong.  If you haven't read it, you should, just in case you are experiencing something weird. My weird is that nothing in the timeline has happened to me except Day 1...And every day so far has been as easy to stick to as Day 1...no withdrawal symptoms, no killing all the things...even the smoking thing hasn't really been an issue.  I'm kind of starting to wonder if I'm doing something wrong.  But then the Timeline has a disclaimer right on it that says everyone's Whole30 is different.  Mine's really different - consistently awesome so far!

So, enough jibberjabbering...lol

Day 4:
Breakfast:  3 scrambled eggs with green peppers, onions, spinach and kale, topped with compliant salsa.

Lunch: Chicken salad consisting only of half an avocado and a palm-sized serving of grilled chicken, with salt and pepper to taste; also had one banana; and a side of a casserole that would be homemade cabbage roll casserole if it had rice, but since it didn't, it is 'Cabbage, stewed tomato, ground beef, onion and garlic casserole."
Supper: Sweet potato, baked, plain; one large ripe tomato with black pepper on it; and compliant salsa on turkey meatloaf (made with this recipe, tweaked slightly: coconut flour and an extra egg and no coconut aminos...and I added about two tbsp poultry seasoning): http://www.primalpalate.com/paleo-blog/turkey-meatloaf/

And, by the way, I LOVE SWEET POTATOES!  They are my new favourite food.  I mean, I've had them before, but never without being loaded down with margarine and brown sugar.  Now that I've eaten them plain from the oven, I can't imagine ever going back to adding sugar.

Anyone reading, feel free to spam me with sweet potato recipes!!!  :)

There's a lot of info in the forums, so it's not surprising they're a bit confusing for the new people.  I've been a bit confused from time to time, too!

I will head over to your log when I'm through posting my meals for today. :)

So, I was very proud of myself today.  We went out of town to some friends' Xmas party, and went out to a restaurant for supper.  There was NOT ONE THING on the menu I could have unaltered.  So, I asked the server about different ingredients, rubs, marinades, etc. and ended up with a delicious supper that didn't have one ingredient that was non-compliant. :)

So,  here's today's meals:

Day 5:

Breakfast: Leftover turkey meatloaf, leftover cabbage casserole, acorn squash.

Lunch: Turkey Meatloaf, cabbage casserole, sweet potato

Supper: grilled salmon, baked potato, and steamed carrots, broccoli and red peppers. :)

Snack: Assorted fruits from fruit tray I brought to the Xmas party

Meal 4: Small amount of cabbage casserole with a few chicken breast strips.  (We ate supper at 8, I had another meal when we got home at 4am.)

Now off to read your log, TLaposi, then off to bed!

No time to do a proper log, so just a quick once over on today's meals.

Day 6:

Breakfast: Lemon pepper tuna salad on baby greens, tomato, onion, carrot, peppers, radishes

Lunch: Spaghetti Squash and meaty tomato sauce loaded with extra veggies and made from scratch with crushed tomatoes and lean ground beef.  (Note, no matter how hard I tried, I could not imagine the texture was anything like actual spaghetti, but it was still good. :) )

Supper: Sweet potato nachos:  Layer of baked sweet potato wedges, layer of ground beef with homemade taco seasoning, layer of veggies - tomato, green peppers and onions - and a layer of homemade guacamole - avocado, diced tomato, diced fresh cilantro, salt, and juice from one lemon.  It was really good, but I think next time I'll do it without the sweet potato.  (Bake it and have it on the side.)

My W30 may not have gone according to timeline so far, but right now...I just want a nap.  Early bedtime!!

Amy my first week was pretty amazing as well had a few tired days but I was trying to figure how much I needed to eat, with the additional calorie burning breastfeeding my tiny guy. Then week three I had a few headache days but think they were probably due to not enough water. I am so close to the end. I think I am more excited about our trip then the end of my 30. Think I might try sticking with it while I am gone.

Challenge of the week: making the Christmas candies and baked guide with my kids we always send to family. I know they aren't compliant yadda yadda yadda, but I do it every year and people are expecting! I am so proud of myself I have fully resisted the urge to taste my finished products and haven't liked one spoon or finger! Yay me. I totally got this!!

So impressed with your meals, and determination to quit smoking. I just lost a very close friend to lung cancer that spread, he was only 48 and leaves behind young children and a wife!... You are doing great, keep up the good work. And my daughter has a friend who could not conceive, well after her whole30 she got pregnant...
