mimi36
Why is sunbutter ok in moderation but sunflower oil not ok? Aren't they from the same seed?
Derval
I guess it's because of the processing, and you'd be be heating the sunflower oil? I'm sure a mod can clarify.
mimi36
I was just wondering because I see sunflower as an ingredient in some things. Just curious. Thanks for the reply
Robin Strathdee
Mimi36 - The primary difference is that many people will use heat processed sunflower oil or will use the oil to cook with. Seed oils oxidize at fairly low temperatures, making them rather unhealthy for us. Nuts and seeds in general are packed with Omega 6 fats, which can be inflammatory. Most of us get a disproportionately high amount of Omega 6 fats in our diet, so the Whole30 program asks you to limit foods high in those fats. Sunflower oil is not recommended, however it's not technically forbidden. Sunflower butter is on our "limit" list. Does this help?
Elleon
Can I resurrect this thread? Just to double check - I have some garlic salt that has sunflower oil listed on the ingredient list. I had some on my dinner before noticing that fact... this means a little bit on my food does not merit a restart, right? I am on day 4 of my second Whole 30. Derval
You're ok as far as I know, sunflower oil is limited but not out.
