krissylynn
I purchased a bag of yams (I am pretty sure they were labeled sweet potatoes) and realized, when I cooked them, that they seemed different...are yams acceptable?
Renee Lee
yep! there is a difference, but what you bought is 99% most likely NOT a yam. in the US yams and sweet potatoes are labelled interchangeably. real yams look completely different and are actually almost exclusively found in africa. it's rare that you would find one in the US

JimS
Both yams and sweet potatoes are fine. From what I understand, most "yams" marketed in American supermarkets are actually orange fleshed sweet potatoes. True yams grow in tropical environments such as Central America, the Caribbean and Africa. Here's a couple of links that discuss the differences: http://main.kitchendaily.com/2011/11/16/sweet-potatoes-vs-yams-is-there-a-difference/ http://zoebakes.com/2008/11/21/the-sweet-potato-vs-yam-debate-on-nprs-weekend-america//
Alana in Canada
Thank you for those articles Jim! I love the orange fleshed sweet potatoes--which up here we call yams--and I was afraid to ask if they were OK! (I'm not that much of a fan of the white/yellow ones. They give me a slight bit of gas.)
