My first Whole30 starts MONDAY (1/11/2016)

I started today as well! I spent most of yesterday prepping food and even made a batch of beef bone broth which I drank this morning (comforting on a 0 degree Chicago day). My boyfriend looked like he was going to kill me for how "beefy" our house smelled all weekend but overall, he's being supportive.

I spent much of 2015 battling hormone headaches, listlessness, and just generally feeling "meh." I've also managed to gain ten pounds and while happy in my new relationship, not super happy with my efforts in general.

I am dreading the carb flu which as a total sugar/cake/baked good addict, know is on the horizon. But thank goodness coffee is allowed!

Almost time for lunch - green curry. :)

I'm also afraid of carb flu, we can get through this.  I started my bone broth last night, how long did you cook yours?  I was thinking 2 days; the butcher at Whole Foods told me 3.

Today is my first day. I had scrambled eggs with roasted veggies this morning and then the Harvest Chicken Salad from the book--except I couldn't find cranberries without added sugar :(  I'm feeling hungry and I've already got a headache (I had one this weekend though, so probably not related to the whole30). I've been so excited to start this journey, but now that I've started I feel so unprepared and scared! I don't want to give up...because that's what I always do. I look forward to leaning on you all for support!

Good luck!

Hi Cheryl, we can do this! I did my bone broth for about 12 hours. I saw a range of 12 - 24 hours but honestly, I couldn't take the smell of beef any longer! I only had 3 lbs and I'll say that my broth got all gelatinous like it should and it had good layers of fat that I scraped off per the Whole 30 FAQ on broth: http://whole9life.com/2013/12/whole9-bone-broth-faq/.

I think I'm going to try chicken next time...

Hi my day 2 is coming to an end. I had spinach and broccoli soup for breakfast, sweet potato, bacon and apple hash with a side of roast veggies (asparagus, carrots, courgettes) and for dinner steak, more roast veggies and mushrooms with mayo. I also had an orange and pear. I feel tired now and a bit fuzzy headed but not too bad. The worst thing was cutting my sons chocolate cake for the 4 children I so wanted to lick my fingers but resisted. Here's to a successful 28 days more. I am still having moments of why am I putting myself through this but it will be worth it.

Way to resist temptation, Joy!  I wonder, though, are you getting enough protein?  I didn't see anything except the steak listed, and I know that's a big part of the meal plan.  In the beginning, we'll likely feel tired and fuzzy, but it may be made worse if you're not getting enough of the right foods.  Just wanted to mention it :)

Stay strong, Stephanie! You CAN do this, it just takes a little time and grace on your part.  There are going to be moments & days of fear, exhaustion, or just a sense of wanting to give up.  The difference is we don't, we choose to persevere and take it one choice or meal at a time if needed.  Things got much easier for me when i became really familiar with the rules and wasn't having to overthink EVERY food decision.  It seemed the more time I focused on thinking about food choices, the more fear & temptation increased.  I couldn't follow their menu too long because it wasn't what I would normally want or prepare, and it felt forced...so I had to work on being comfortable enough with the program that I could make my own choices and menu.  I wasn't afraid of boring or simple at times, it's hard to screw up a basic meal of pan-seared protein with roasted veggies and some sort of fat.  No ingredients to read through, no fear, no overthinking.  Then, I played around with a few recipes as I had time or interest.  It became less about this extra "program" and more about normal life for me, and that was a huge turning point.  You'll get there, too.  Don't give up!

I'm not sure about the rules of this, but I'm going to throw it out there because it's really useful.  Sorry admins if I'm breaking a rule  I use iHerb for a lot of my products (including dried cranberries with apple juice instead of sugar, coconut amios, & I just ordered the EPIC protein bars, SOO EXCITED for this portable protein).  They ship worldwide for cheap ($4 for 14 lbs. to Asia, free if I spend over $40) and have additional promos that make it really helpful for me to get hard to find products in Asia.  That link does give you $5 off (and gives me points, in the interest of transparency) but you're welcome to just google them, too.  I'm more interested in sharing how easy it can be to find some of the more obscure products.  Congrats on Day 1...stay strong!

It's so exciting to read about everyone's hopes and fears...it helps to remind myself that I'm not alone in this. Today was a bit of a roller-coaster because I don't think I packed enough food thud I ended up getting a salad with ham and hard-boiled egg without cheese or dressing (the 1st ingredient on the package said soybean oil) and had that about an hour after lunch. I think from now on I'll keep hard-boiled eggs at work until I can figure out the best portions.

WHOOHOO!! Day one down!  I want to thank everyone for sharing here, as it has definitely helped me resist my strongest vice, sweets in the evening.  I have no trouble staying on plan all day, in fact it's comforting to have my meals scheduled, but once the kids are in bed and I have a few minutes of quiet, that's when it's hard.  A bowl of ice cream is tempting right about now, but instead, here I am.  Thanks for your support :-)

You can do it, think of the positives, because what you tell yourself you will believe and I don't want you to sabotage your Whole30.  I looked for blogs and found easy recipes that last a few servings. Please don't make it harder than it is and end up talking yourself out of it.  We can do anything for 30 days.

Yes! Mine's been cooking since Sunday night and I'm a little over the subtle aroma of beef in the air.  I will complete it tonight.  I bought my bones from Whole Foods and the butcher was quite the bone broth specialist, he had lots to say about how to best make it, LOL.

Way to go on not licking your fingers.  I'm day 2 today.  I make a green smoothie for my 16 year old daughter every morning.  Today the Kefir was dripping off the side of the bottle, I wiped it with my finger and instinctively went to lick my finger, I saw my coconut oil sitting on the counter and stopped myself in time.  We can do this.

I got a little bored last night, and I'm a habit snacker.  I looked at the fruit bowl, and argued with myself that I wasn't hungry.  I ended up going to bed before 9.  I sat in bed with the light on and some books and school work.  Physically separating myself from the kitchen helped.

So I had no problem staying on plan. My kids really enjoy what I cook so no problems there. I've had a terrible headache all day. I'm guessing this is because I was such a carb and sugar junkie. I can't wait till I start feeling better.

I'm proud of you aeagan! It sucks that you had a headache, but it also means you're on the right track.

Day two for me was oddly easier than day one. I packed more food today and didn't end up needing it all. I hope to keep this good feeling in mind when things get rough.

To everyone else: Go Fight Win!

I read that days 2 and 3 are 'hangover' days.  You are more than halfway through your hangover day, you can do it!

Hi Everyone! I started my first Whole30 on Monday (just now catching up on the thread!) I'm very excited to be doing this. I had lost about 40 pounds from 2013-2014, and due to a very stressful 2015, I gained almost all of it back. I have a terrible relationship with food and I know that I need to get this sorted out. I'm confident that I can do this, but I know there will be a lot of temptations along the way (aka Super Bowl on day 28... why did I do that to myself?!)

Although my husband is very supportive, he is NOT doing it with me (in fact, he really doesn't eat healthy at all!), so that's been tough. All of the bad foods are still in our house, and very tempting! Plus I have a 4 year old daughter who is a very good "sharer", and likes to basically shove whatever she's eating into my mouth so that I can try it too (ie. the little bowl of skittles she was having last night... "try this yellow one mommy, it's good!") I had to physically stop myself like 6 times from just mindlessly popping them in my mouth. Definitely eye opening on how much those little bites here and there that you don't even think abut really add up.

I haven't the day 2-3 "hangover" yet, so hopefully I pass right through that with no issues (though I'm prone to migraines, so I'm just waiting for one to hit me like a ton of bricks!) Coffee without cream & sugar has been the thing I've missed most so far, surprisingly. Coconut milk and cinnamon just isn't the same haha. Trying to keep the sugar cravings at bay with apples + almond butter as well.

Happy hump day & day 3 everyone!! :)

I know it's difficult, but if you do have issues with the sugar dragon you way not want to replace your sweets with "on plan" items that fulfill that same role. Remember we want to rewire our brains to address our unhealthy relationship with sweets. This is not a criticism I just want you to be aware of what you're doing :-)

LindseyG1985 Oh I know. And honestly, I haven't been craving sweets too much anyway. I've just been having an apple in the early afternoon to avoid the craving from hitting (I usually eat 6 small meals a day, so going down to 3 meals has been an adjustment in itself) I'm hoping that if I nip it in the bud before it really comes on, that it'll be easier to manage. But I do appreciate that, because I do need to be more conscious of it. Thank you!! :)

Those headaches are no joke! Keep up the good work and once you're past the 3rd day you should be feeling better headache wise.

Day three! Woohoo! So far so good. I work long hours so raw veggies and fruit are keeping me going. I am going to experiment with soup this weekend. That will help with lunches on work days. I am very scared of what is going to happen on Friday when I have to run 10 miles for my training. I have always used some sort of nutrition that is processed. I think I will try applesauce and may Justin's almond butter packets. For ten miles I should only need to replenish one time during the run. I guess I will know pretty quickly if this is going to work! Keep up the good work everyone! You got this!

Sorry that your husband isn't more on board with this for you. I have found it helpful that mine is willing to follow the plan with me. In re: of your daughter with the skittles, it might be worthwhile to use these 30 days as a way to model and teach her healthier eating habits. I have two daughters (9 and 10, so they are able to understand it more) and I have been talking with them about why I'm doing this and why we should pay more attention to what we eat and what we put in our bodies and how it makes us feel. I know it's only been three days, but my girls have not been eating or asking for any junk food that they were used to eating daily. My daughter even made the comment to me as we were eating stuffed peppers tonight that dinners on this whole 30 thing taste really good.

Hang in there! I too have a really bad relationship with food and have gone up-and-down with my weight for almost 15 years. I'd like to put an end to that now.

Let's do this!!!
