Lack of Appetite

Recommended Posts

Even when I'm cooking, good healthy meals, the smell just makes me lose my appetite. My doctor actually put me on the LOW FODMAPS diet for IBS symptoms. I also have a rare form of Crohn's disease. With the LOWFODMAPS, I can't have garlic or onion, so everything is so bland, I just don't want to eat. I force myself to, but some times I just want to throw up. Anyone else have this issue? I'm on vacation, so my sleep schedule is off, so I'm not eating three meals a day. Usually 1-2 with lots of water. I'm starting day seven and don't know how long I can last. I start back to work tomorrow with added stress.

Lack of appetite can be an indicator that your hormones are out of whack and not eating actually only perpetuates this. Even when you're on vacation you should try to keep to some  semblance of a routine to try & help balance things out - eating within an hour of wakening (as we would recommend here) being one of the key factors in resolving matters.

Have you tried flavouring your dishes with other ingredients such as cinnamon, turmeric, & ginger? All anti-inflammatory & all adding a good strong flavour to your meals - I'm low FODMAP too by the way and I use these three in many of my recipes. Fresh herbs work well too, as do infused oils.... Put your focus on the things you can have rather than focusing on what you can't - and breathe.... you're approaching the hardest few days, but we're here to see you through...

Animals fats can add a lot of flavor as well, duck fat, goose fat, chicken fat.

I had to learn how to cook differently my first Whole30 as my old way of cooking wasn't very tasty after I cleaned up old recipes. But finding new recipes, that changed everything.

Don't forget salt either, it may help with the nausea too, if you're not getting enough.

Well I threw up my breakfast at work today. Then I felt dizzy. I had eggs, spinach and a bell pepper. I caved in a got some food at lunch from a restaurant that isn't Whole30. The nausea is gone, although it didn't taste as good as it used to. I guess I'll start over. I don't like feeling this way. Even smelling the new fats makes me feel sick.

Throwing up is not a normal symptom of Whole30.  You'd stated that even when you're cooking healthy meals the smell makes you lose your appetite.  Was this an ongoing thing before Whole30?

What did you eat that was not Whole30?

Eggs, spinach and pepper.........personally.........that would not make me very happy for breakfast either and it may be hard on your stomach if you aren't used to eating first thing in the morning.  Can you try something a bit more satisfying and easier on the stomach like sliced chicken breast, some sweet potato and a cubed avocado? Salt it all and drizzle on some ghee or coconut oil or sprinkle the sweet potato with a bit of cinnamon.

What did you used to eat for breakfast before Whole30? Or did you?

I had a Sprite and tried a small cheeseburger to see if it would help. It surprisingly didn't taste as good as I thought, and it didn't make me feel better. Before Whole30, I would have a Coke cola and either protein bar or a biscuit for breakfast, and sometimes fruit and weight control oatmeal. I've never been a want to eat first thing in the morning girl.

I talked to some friends and I contemplated just going LOW FODMAP like my doctor directed. He isn't familiar with Whole30, but said his wife recently got the book and they may start soon. After weighing the options with friends, I decided to stick with Whole30.

I bought some spices yesterday, but I'm not the best at putting things together. I have the cook book, but virtually everything has garlic and onions which is a no for the FODMAPS.

And yes to the question, I lose my appetite to cooking things that don't smell good at first. However, I was in an inservice meeting, and it came over me all a sudden. I take Adderol so it could be that.

I just need good LOw FODMAP, Whole30 breakfast recipes. When I was little, we ate cereal, oatmeal, or pop tarts...so that's what I'm accustomed to eating in the morning.
