Sauteing the onions and browning the meat first removes a good amount of the water, which intensifies the flavour.

I do this first using the saute function on my pressure cooker, and then finish the recipe using the slow cooker function.

I've been interested in this recipe but find the lack of veggies in it a turn off. Do you guys serve it with any veggies on the side, or add some or anything? Maybe spinach and bell peppers. I love meat but it just seems like it's pure meat. :) Ha.

I make a similarly-styled beef stew but use mashed cauliflower to thicken it and carrots/celery/spinach for added veggies. The chocolate/beef combo is so good. :)

You can add veggies to it if you like it that way. I serve mine over heaping mounds of wilted dark leafy greens and roasted cubed sweet potatoes.
