Nut bloat

Recommended Posts

So, I ate a tonne of nuts over the weekend (not a literal tonne, but an awful lot :) ), and I am now predictably bloated and flabby.

My question is this: how long does bloat from this kind of excess last, typically? I would have expected it to be subsiding after a day. Although they also make me constipated, so that wouldn't be helping (a good dose of magnesium helped with that though).

Secondly, does anyone know why nuts cause bloating? Is it the phytic acid in them? In which case, would activated nuts be less likely to cause it? (Not asking so I can run out and pay twice the price to stuff myself with activated nuts - just curious.)

Thanks!

I activate my own nuts. Soak them overnight (12 hrs), rinse and then dry them in the oven at a low heat (70 degrees). It takes ages! When they are super dry and crunchy, store them in the freezer. They keep well, can be eaten straight from the freezer and you'll eat less of them (out of sight out of mind)! I do my seeds the same way.

Careful with cashews - I soaked them for too long and they lost their flavour.
