Emily T
My cast iron skillet is in dire need of re-seasoning. I usually do this with vegetable oil but obviously that is out. Does anyone know...if I use coconut oil, will my food taste like coconut? (I hate the flavor.) Could I use butter or ghee?
MeadowLily
Use lard...it's the best seasoning for cast iron or beef tallow. Go to the butcher and ask for beef tallow.

CaGirl
Any oil will do.. if you did use veggie oil no harm no foul.. it seasons the pan not your food after wards
jent103
I use whatever fat I'm cooking with. I only use expeller pressed refined coconut oil because I hate the taste of coconut in general, but that works well, in addition to well-sourced lard or tallow. bcote
Since it is heat that makes the oil form the shield for your pan, you need to use a high heat type oil. Think lard, grape seed, etc..
