Airplane Special Meals

Recommended Posts

I am taking several international long flights in 2023.

I’m currently doing a very strict Whole30 protocol for all of December, and intend to carry it forward into 2023 - especially avoiding sugars!  My first long international trip will be in March.  While I will take food on the plane with me, the airline gives option for “special meals” which include meals prepared for Diabetics; or a low fat, low calorie, low cholesterol (which appears to have minimal sugar, etc).  I’m wondering if anyone knows, which of the meals is the “best option” even though not strictly Whole 30 compliant?

Hoping my question is clear.  I do understand that the airlines are NOT providing Whole30 compliant.  I’m looking for the least impact to my system (especially as it relates to sugar).  There is also a “bland” meal which will have limited “spice” ingredients.

Thanks!

Hi @LRH - it would be extremely difficult for us to know based on their categorization of the meals. I would see if you can get an ingredient list for each meal and review from there. Things like dairy or gluten would be much more problematic than, say, some sugar in a dressing.

If you are looking for the least harm to your system, a special menu for diabetics is probably your best bet. Such menus usually contain less sugar and carbohydrates, which can help you avoid unwanted reactions on the flight.

However, if you are strictly following Whole30 protocol, your best option may be to prepare and pack your own food on the plane. You can prepare and bring your own foods such as nuts, fruits, vegetables and protein products that will meet your requirements.
