The cholesterol fight

Hi guys!

I've been paleo since January and on day 21 of my second Whole30. I just got my blood results back and I was shocked to find out that my already high cholesterol (241 in November 2012) went up to 310.

Now I have to defend myself in front of my husband who is telling me to stop eating eggs (I eat 2, max 3 per day) and coconut butter (I'd have 2-3 tsp after dinner). I'm strict with my diet, do crossfit 4-5times a week, bike to work (total of 45-50mins each day).

Any ideas why the numbers could be so high? Any advice is appreciated :) Desperate here! Thank you!

One guy who's writtena lot about cholesterol is Dr John Briffa. He has a good post about it here http://www.drbriffa.com/2013/04/17/how-reliable-are-cardiovascular-disease-calculators/

He concludes "However, a study published in 2009 found that almost three-quarters of individuals admitted to hospital because of heart disease had LDL-cholesterol levels that would be regarded as acceptable or even low [4].

This caused some to call for cholesterol targets to be brought down even further. Another interpretation might be this: LDL-cholesterol is not a particularly important factor in heart disease and therefore not a good predictor for the condition either."

He's not Paleo oriented so much as low carb but he's researched and written a lot about cholesterol. There's loads of articles on his blog that make really interesting reading.

Hi Miriam,

I've had a similiar situation, after going Paleo my cholesterol went up as well: http://i.imgur.com/i5nPW.png (number might be calculated different here, but when the numbers are in blue, it's considered bad)

But as far as I know, your tryglicerides are very important and if they are low, there is nothing to worry about.

I posted my "problem" on Reddit a while ago, and got some good feedback as well: http://nl.reddit.com...terol_question/

Also, in my country the rule is, if you divide your total cholesterol by your HDL, the number should be below 4 (so in my case it's 2.4)

I have an almost exact eating/exercise pattern to you, except for the coconut butter :)

Hi guys!

Thank you for the great references and advice :)

Penotti, my comes up to 2.6 when divided :) And also, my tryglicerides are 32. I don't really understand that number, but on the blood results it is marked as very good.

Thank you all again!
