intheboonies
The recipe calls for a 14.5 oz. can of beef broth. What brands are Whole30 compliant? Seems every one I look at has dextrose and/or some other nasty. I don't have any bone broth and don't anticipate making it any time soon. Is there another sub that can be made? missmary
I just used water. You could use chicken broth if you have that available.
moggle
I use half ground beef and half diced shin (sold as 'gravy beef' here Australia) and simmer for at least 3 hours. The gravy beef kind of makes its own stock (the sauce goes very jelli-fied when cold). I add home-made stock too, but I bet a little bit of water would be fine. Bethany Lannon
I have used vegetable broth in mine and it came out great.
GFChris
I was just in my local Whole Foods and noticed the Pacific brand of beef broth looks compliant (Note: surprisingly, their organic beef broth is not - contains cane sugar.)
RiverSong
I make my own broth but didn't have any thawed, so when we made this (again!) last night we just used water and it came out just as delicious as the first time I made the recipe
Vian
I was just in my local Whole Foods and noticed the Pacific brand of beef broth looks compliant (Note: surprisingly, their organic beef broth is not - contains cane sugar.) Be careful. We have that brand here and it has Autolyzed Yeast Extract, aka MSG. http://www.pacificfoods.com/food/broths-stocks/broths/natural-beef-broth
GFChris
Be careful. We have that brand here and it has Autolyzed Yeast Extract, aka MSG. http://www.pacificfoods.com/food/broths-stocks/broths/natural-beef-broth ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks for the heads-up. Given that this product was at Whole Foods and I didn't think Whole Foods sold any products with MSG, I found this article: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/blog/whole-story/myths-and-misconceptions-msg The article states that Autolyzed Yeast Extract is a "completely natural ingredient that ... contains glutamates but nowhere near the concentration of MSG." So, I'm guessing it would still be ok on the Whole30. It sounds like unless someone is extremely sensitive to glutamates, this product would be fine. SweetieBsMom
I used broth that was compliant from Whole Foods. I also used homemade beef broth that I had made using gf bones.
