It might come from milk. It's also produced by our muscles. It's also part of the lactofermentation process, which is how sauerkraut and kimchi and other ferments are made. Citric acid is okay, per the Can I Have list. When you have questions about something, the easiest way to find out if it's been addressed before is to google Whole30 plus whatever your question is, so in this case Whole30 lactic acid would have turned up a lot of answers.
