Brighty
I am 4 days in and doing well. Going into Memorial Day I have a few events that I need to prepare myself for. Going out to dinner, is it safe to say that a salad (with veggies only) and grilled steak/chicken/fish will be fine? Just olive oil and salt? Catered BBQs... Do I trust them? Eat before? Bring my own? Just looking for tips to get thru this weekend.
GFChris
On the grilled steak/chicken/fish, confirm the oil or ask it to be dry-grilled. Only salt and pepper for seasonings. (Be sure that especially the chicken is not pre-floured ahead of time.)Catered BBQ is tricky to have gluten-free, given possible marinades, sauces or seasonings are suspect for off-plan ingredients like gluten, soy, and sugar. I'd eat before or bring your own.
MeadowLily
Watch out for those sugar sweetened dried cranberries that they like to throw into the salads.
Moderators ultrarunnergirl Posted May 21, 2015 Moderators Share Posted May 21, 2015 Melissa Joulwan just posted a helpful piece on what to bring to potlucks! (A few of her ideas might not be appropriate for you on a Whole30, but most of them are good to go.)
Munkers
Catered BBQ is probably a miss. Even if you get a dry piece of brisket with no sauce, it's very common for the dry rubs to contain some form of sugar. And if they use a commercial rub instead of mixing their own (and for shame if they do) then odds are good there may also be maltrodextrin, MSG, or other junk in the mix.
