BirdyP
I have used glutamine in the past for help with recovery. After starting the Whole 30 I started really checking into the labels of everything. My glutamine has an ingredient of neotame. After researching I find this is an artificial sweetener. So I contacted the company. They told me that there is such a little amount that is is used as a flavor enhancer NOT an artificial sweetener. Plus it is so minute it does not cause the body to produce any glycemic response. Therefore they claim there is not added sweeteners of any kind. Can use this?
LucieB
Love how they seem to twist a sweetener into a flavor enhancer! Sweetening does seem to enhance flavor for some people, so I think that's why it is there. Besides, if like they say it is in such teeny amounts, then why add it? I'd say it's a no-go, see what the mods say. What type of recovery are you referring to? Exercise? Stress?
GFChris
Neotame has been previously called out by Melissa as an ingredient that is off limits: sorry. http://forum.whole9life.com/topic/24731-uk-e-numbers-to-avoid/
BirdyP
Thanks!! Yes I was using it after exercise. I kind of thought that may be the answer though. Thanks for the help!!
missmary
It sounds like the OP is good to go. One nuance for others reading this thread: it does not matter "why" a sweetener is added, or in what amount. It is never ok to have added sweeteners on the whole30.
