Today is Day 15 of my Whole30 and I just realized I have failed. Some of my vitamins have ingredients that are not approved.

Thanks in advance for any help with this!!

So, I did not read most of your ingredients, but to your questions at the end:

Barley grass (and by the same logic oat grass) is ok: http://forum.whole30.com/topic/24574-spirulina-and-green-barley/

alfalfa, also a grass, should be ok:

rice bran is not compliant (in the do not eat grains section): http://whole30.com/whole30-program-rules/

Did your doctor prescribe these? If the doctor prescribed them, keep taking them, regardless. Doctor's orders trump Whole30 rules.

Moderators here are volunteers, and none of us are going to google every one of these items to double check whether they're compliant or not. Frankly, a big part of Whole30 is you learning to pay attention to what you're putting in your body and taking responsibility for those choices -- and that applies whether we're talking about ingredients in bacon or in vitamins.

Many of these ingredients I have never heard of, so I don't know what they are, I would literally have to sit here and google each of them to answer your question thoroughly. I do know that one of these products listed glycerin, and that is a sweetener, so it's not okay. I would suggest you look up each ingredient, figure out what they all are, and then try to determine whether they are things that sound like they are in keeping with Whole30's goal of eating real, whole foods. You can google Whole30 + whatever you're looking for, or Whole30 forum + whatever you're looking for, and if it's been discussed on the forum, you should find it.

Here's a helpful article about choosing supplements, and here's the Sneaky Sugars list with other names for sweeteners you should avoid, and here's a list of other additives and whether they are okay or not.

If you narrow it down to just a couple of particular ingredients that you're not sure about, come back and post again and we'll see if we can help.

Hi, Shannon. Thank you for your response. I apologize - I didn't mean to imply that anyone should look all these up... I was hoping for just what you did - spotting that one sneaky thing and calling it out. I may go look up all the ingredients (which I was trying to avoid) or I may just toss them in a drawer for the restart (no, they aren't prescribed).

On the ones I listed that I thought were problems (at the bottom of the post) do you agree those are off-limits?

Thanks again!

Denise

@slc_melissa was correct -- the grasses are okay (even though the actual grains wouldn't be -- the seed/grain part is the problem, not the leafy green part of the plant), but the rice bran is not okay.

@ShannonM816 thank you. Would that also be true of "sprouts" -- as in "organic quinoa sprouts" (and a bunch of other similar non-gluten-grain and legume sprouts? This is in Greens Superfood capsules. If grasses are ok then the sprouts are the only questionable thing.

Really kicking myself for messing this up because now I can't restart until late January. }:-<

Thanks for your help!
