ann_too
Hello! In the south many veggies are boiled with fat back or salt pork. It gives it great flavor! It is not approved on the Whole30 plan though?
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted January 4, 2017 Moderators Share Posted January 4, 2017 If the product is made with sugar or other non compliant ingredients, then it's out. If it's straight animal fat and it comes from a properly raised animal that has not been shot through with toxins and steroids, then go for it! laura_juggles
Just as a side note "shot through with toxins and steroids" seems a bit hyperbolic when, at least in the US, there are no approved uses of steroid hormones in dairy cows, veal calves, pigs, or poultry. Growth hormones are not allowed in pigs, poultry, or dairy cows in Canada. So much of the Whole30 seems to be about making more intelligent choices when it comes to the foods we buy and eat. Seems like that should also include wading through marketing hype.
Administrators ladyshanny Posted January 4, 2017 Administrators Share Posted January 4, 2017 Agreed. Using the fat only from properly raised animals is just a recommendation, not a rule. It's better to use fat from properly raised animals as the fat is where any toxins tend to be stored. But it's just a "best practice" recommendation.
