Runningforme82
Our local Fresh Market (similar to Whole Foods but smaller scale) has started carrying Grass Fed ground beef from Australia. I can't get it local right now as the cows aren't ready. Think the Australian is still better option than non grass fed even though its coming clear from Australia? Thanks for the input! amberino21
I'm slightly confused by your question... I buy organic grass fed steaks from Coles and make my own mince if that's what I want. Pretty sure woollies sells grass fed too, or you'd get it easily from specialist butchers. I personally don't buy mince because I want to know what's in it! Making your own is easy in the food processor.
amberino21
Are you outside of Australia? I'd say the Aussie beef would be high standard, regulations are quite strict here
Runningforme82
Thanks for your response. I'm in the US, and while I can get local grass fed from a local butcher they are out right now. Our Fresh Market (higher end chain store) started carrying grass fed ground beef from Australia. I assumed it would be a good option and bought some but wasn't sure so thought I would ask here
GFChris
I live in the US and my local grocery store has grass-fed beef from Australia. I buy it frequently and prefer the look and taste to commercial ground beef.
drtracyb
There was an NPR piece just last week or so about how most grass-fed beef sold in the US is imported from Australia because it is less expensive due to cheap land and year-round grass. NazzaB
Yep, my friend's husband used to be a butcher wholesaler and he would sell all the meat to the supermarkets. I asked her where is the best place to buy good quality grass fed beef and she said Coles!! I was so surprised. Is supermarket mince bad? I always buy it.. I don't buy Coles meat - it's not specified whether it's grass or grain fed, and I'd presume it isn't. It's definitely not organic...ours has a separate range of organic grass fed. Personally I don't buy mince as I like knowing what is in it (in terms of fat and potential chemical/additives/preservatives etc.)
KimmyW
I'm an Australian and I was having a lovely chat to the butcher this morning about sources of meat in Australia, and he said with only a few exceptions most of our beef is grass fed. He said they might be fed grain right at the end when they go to market, but it's not common to get purely grain-fed cattle here. Yay for Australia!Pork on the other hand doesn't seem as reliable. And trying to find bacon that hasn't been cured with sugar? Virtually impossible! I did buy a pork belly today and I'm going to try making my own bacon. praxisproject
I've asked the Coles butcher and he said some of the beef may be finished on non-grass sources but much of it isn't. The King Island Beef is 100% grass fed and not finished with anything different. For US folks, grain fed meat here tends to be wheat feed, rather than soy or corn as it's cheaper locally.Free range pork is about the best you'll get in the supermarkets, but from what I've heard, it's often grain fed and checking labels carefully, some isn't really free range either "bred free range".You can get some pure proscuittos in some supermarkets that are just pork and salt, but some are really nasty.Sugar free bacon is very hard to get. I baked a pork belly for my Whole30 This close to Xmas, keep your eyes peeled for Bertocchi Porchetta, it's not quite bacon, but it's delicious and Whole30 safe! These guys have organic pork, but can't see any sugar free bacon http://www.organicmeatsupply.com.au
amberino21
I rarely buy pork, praxis - the link you posted looks fantastic, if only they shipped over here! We get "free range", but it's still grain fed (and corn fed I think)...
praxisproject
I find the corn fed meats look totally freaky, mustard yellow chicken! O.oYou know, it might be worth emailing them to ask if they know of any WA suppliers/growers.
Mel3519
Amberino, are you in WA? I live in Perth and i'm part of a food co-op that gets hold of organic grass fed beef, pork, and lamb. The bacon is delicious and nitrite free, but cured with sugar
amberino21
I am, Mel! That sounds interesting - I've got good places to get grass fed beef and lamb, but struggle with pork...we don't eat bacon, so that isn't so much of an issue I'd love some more info - perhaps you could message me?
