Need Paleo Soup recipes without Meat - seafood fine

I'm trying to find some recipes that would allow us to eat soup in the car (thermoses) after liturgy service Wednesday nights between church and boy scouts.  They need to be meat free- as I'm trying to abide a little to our church fasting rules at least on Wed and Fridays during Lent while we also do the Whole30.  Does anyone have recipes that can include seafood as a protein but NOT bacon or other meat??  Everything I'm finding calls for bacon... I guess I could make it without but I'm guessing it would be pretty bland.  Maybe that's not a bad thing...  I'm okay with using broth.... but that's my limit for Wednesdays.

Maybe you would have better luck finding compliant vegetarian soups and adding seafood? Nom Nom Paleo's cookbook has four that would work (mulligatawny, curried cream of broccoli, carrot+cardamom and watermellon gazpacho). You could add cubes of cooked mild white fish or shrimp, maybe?

The other approach would be to look for seafood soups and modify them to be compliant.

or...google "paleo fish soup"? Here are three that look promising. I didn't see any bacon  :)

How about shrimp gumbo, Manhattan style clam chowder, spicy kale and shrimp soup (search on allrecipes) obviously omit the beans and any non compliant ingredients, Thai coconut and shrimp soup (Tom Yum), Avocado and Shrimp soup, Thai Curry.

My basic soup recipe is a variant of this one : http://food52.com/recipes/15247-paul-bertolli-s-cauliflower-soup

I change the vegetables out, and nowdays I use bone broth in place of water.  You could add coconut milk to make it creamy if you'd like too.  I also sometimes sub leeks or scallions or shallots for regular onion, depending on what I have on hand or what needs to be used up.

Thank you everyone.  Every chowder recipe I find has bacon in it.  And I'm wondering what the flavor would be (If it was just me, I'd try it...but trying to please others as well) without it.  I'll try the links above and I'll look for a Mediterranean recipe...

I have seen some vegan chowder recipes that use liquid smoke to replace the "bacon" flavor, but honestly I can't imagine leaving the bacon out would ruin a chowder recipe. People should be grateful you are preparing healthy meals for them.

Hi There,

Here's one that is a hit in our house :

sub celery root in for potato and add another cup of broth instead of the buttermilk.

Here's another one for butternut soup. Please note that this one can be pretty sweet/spicy

I have been making soups because my husband's jaw is impaired.  I have found recipes that use coconut milk, or cashews blended in, or avocado.  Adding protein after has been pretty easy.

I have made so many soups for my W30 and haven't needed to adapt any because of bacon.  I've had to substitute for other things, like white potatoes or grains.  Here's one that came with my winter CSA (subbed coconut milk for the dairy):  http://intervalefoodhub.com/library/gingered-carrot-parsnip-soup/

This winter I've done:

Curried Butternut Squash Soup without the yogurt: http://www.molliekatzen.com/recipes/recipe.php?recipe=curried_squash_soup,

Celery Root Bisque with Shiitake Mushrooms using coconut milk and ghee: http://www.canadianliving.com/food/celery_root_bisque_with_shiitake_mushrooms.php,

Roasted Pumpkin Coconut Soup: http://paleopot.com/2013/10/roasted-pumpkin-coconut-soup/,

"Cream" of Tomato Soup: http://paleocomfortfoods.com/recipes/creamy-dairy-free-tomato-soup/,

Thai Coconut Lime Shrimp Soup (it was an Atkins recipe, but I've searched their site and can't find it!  I printed it out awhile back.  Here it is from another site, but the original didn't have sugar substitute - it's mostly the same:  http://huntley-girls.blogspot.com/2009/05/atkins-thai-coconut-soup.html

I've been home sick for 2 days, so I'm using up all my frozen soups now - but a lot have meat (turkey soup, chicken vegetable soup).  I'm making chicken stock from bones now.

Hope this helps!  I know that WellFed 1 and 2 have some fantastic soup recipes, and Melissa Joulwan posts a lot of her recipes on her blog:  theclothesmakethegirl.com, and Michelle Tam has some great soup recipes on her blogsite nomnompaleo.com.

The soup I make most often is this one. I now modify it (I use chicken broth in place of half or all of the water and I leave out the lentils, obviously). It doesn't contain much fat and you'd probably want additional protein if you were eating it as a meal.

My other favorite is a seafood stew from Simply Recipes called Moqueca. DELICIOUS.

Good luck!

Skinnytaste has a lot of delicious soup recipes, but my absolute favorite is her pumpkin sage soup. She does make it with butter, but you could substitute ghee or olive oil (it's just enough to sautee the onions). This soup is incredibly filling and it's so good! It's absolutely incredible with fresh pumpkin, but canned pumpkin is also good, just a different flavor. Here's the link: http://www.skinnytaste.com/2012/10/roasted-pumpkin-sage-soup.html
