Spring into May Whole 30!

Recommended Posts

Hi Claws!! Good to see you in cyberspace again! :) YES it is so helpful to have others to keep us honest. Even though I've never met any of you prior W30ers in person, it's fun developing Whole30 friendship all the same. ... Maybe someday we can all rendezvous at some W30 convention - or somewhere else entirely -- like Cinque Terre, Italy ;) or the Grand Canyon. I've got a travel bug in me.

Welcome newcomers! Today is a good day to finish prep for the first week. I like what Wholemama said to prep with easy foods until you have time on weekend to prep for next week.

I have time this morning/early aft to roast a chicken, and make chocolate chili, (no beans) - both very easy recipes - and already have planned my meals for tomorrow, which will include leftovers from tonight's kickstart, kickass, W30 compliant dinner of salmon with basil, lemon, rosemary and Tunisian roasted veggies minus the couscous and honey. Yes, I will be eating nuts, and perhaps going a bit nutty with nuts today, which are W30 compliant, but I'm removing nuts during this W30 for a rest and reintro in June.

Tim re quitting smoking too -- sometimes that kind of jump-start detox cleansing can really work since our mindset is gung ho -- and our bodies are so shot. That's how I quit smoking two decades ago - did a food detox and threw my cigs away. It was fairly easy for me though bec I was experiencing major hives, swollen joints and smoking only made it worse. So THAT said, I think what Wholemama said also makes sense - it's more realistic to try cutting cigs out slowly and focus on healthy eats and lots of water. Do what you think is best - this is all an exploration and a learning experience. Maybe try cold turkey no cigs for a week and see how it works for you. Just stay truly true to your Whole30 regimen and feel free to share what's going on in this forum. I find these forums are truly HUGE in keeping me on track.

OK, to the kitchen for an hour of prepping and cooking.

Liking the W30 convention idea.  Maybe Melissa and Dallas will take your suggestion into consideration.  I enjoy traveling as well and keep dreaming that maybe one day, I will have a job that allows me to do just that.

EPIC FAIL!!!  Ate a salad with TJ's smoked trout for lunch.  After lunch I'm putting the package away and read that it contains cane sugar!!!!!!  Agggggh!  Didn't read the label just assumed.  I never use sugar when I smoke meat & fish!!  Their smoked salmon is safe (read the ingredients). Repeat Day 1.  Better than being on day 29!  lol

I am with you!!!!!  a start over for me as well!!! I had a stressful day at work,we ended up eating out. The turkey breast was coated in honey and cranberries. How did I miss that , I scraped off what I could, and then ate away!!!  I was too tired to send it back. I just decided I will start over today!!! On a positive note, I didn't give in and make it a blown out food fest!!!!  That was a behavior of the past!!  I let my gaurd  down and didn't check how it was prepared. You are right..... never assume!!!

Hi everyone! I also started on May 1, & am so excited to be on this journey.

I am 22, I live as a missionary in South Africa.  I wanted to do the Whole30 because I since moving to the other end of the earth (I'm from Seattle), I began to use food as a coping mechanism! I see how it's impacted my life not in weight gain, but in depression & apathy. I have felt sluggish & extremely depressed for a few months & doing the whole30, along with some other changes, I trust will make a difference!

It's a little bit difficult here, because organic is basically non-existent, & for what small selection there is, it's absurdly expensive.  So by whole30 strict standards, I am off. HOWEVER, I am doing 100% of what I can with what I have, & that has to be enough! We're going into winter here so the fruits have just changed a bit, but avo's are cheaper now than I've seen them so far so I'm thankful for that!

Grateful for a community to bounce ideas off of & grow with! We can do this. :)

Hi Madeleine:

You're good to go....in the words of Dallas and Melissa:

Your only job during the Whole30 is to focus on making good food choices. You don’t need to weigh or measure, you don’t need to count calories, you don’t need to stress about organic, grass-fed, pastured or free range. Just figure out how to stick to the Whole30 in any setting, around every special circumstance, under any amount of stress… for 30 straight days. Your only job? Eat. Good. Food.

We're here for you......

Hi friends! Quick check in as I haven't been able to read all the posts yet. Yesterday was really hard, got stuck at work until 9pm. I ended up having a huge plate of fruit and veggies and a larabar as a snack to hold me over and had dinner at 9:30pm, went to bed at 10pm. Not ideal but I'll be more prepared next time.

I'm feeling ok, a little impatient but no huge cravings, no terrible GI upsets.. My body so far feels pretty happy with me. I did dream I had tons of non compliant ranch dressing though.

I'll try to catch up with all the posts later, so thankful for this group!!!

I finally got to the gym last night!  i've been WAY over stressed at work, and working way too many hours.  I haven't been to the gym in weeks, but yesterday I was about to snap.  So I called in a co-worker to cover my last hour and I took some "me" time.  I feel much better now.  A little less stressed, and ready for today.

I also suffer from General Anxiety Disorder, and have been feeling myself get more and more anxious over the past few months.  I'm hoping this round of Whole30 will also help me calm down like it did last time and I went off my meds.  (Haven't been back on them since)

Today's meals:

M1

Two Fried Eggs

Roasted brussle sprouts (in Ghee)  with bacon.....mmmmmm, bacon

M2

Leftover Mexican Pulled Pork, salsa, 1/2 avocado and sweet pepper

M3

BBQ'd whole chicken

Roasted potatoes for hubby, Roasted Sweet Potatoes for me

and whatever veggies are in the fridge.

Day 5 !

I am utterly exhausted today. I seem to be following the timeline very closely. I want to crawl under desk and fall into a deep sleep. It's not helping that my 10 month old wakes up at 5am (and we don't need to get up until 7:20!!)

Today so far....

Meal1: 3 egg omelet cooked in coconut oil

            whole sweet potato with ghee

            brussel sprouts

I got to work and had to drink a black coffee. I am seriously dragging bad at work, and I need some energy. It's so funny. My entire life I'd never drank black coffee. this is my second one in 5 days, and it's really not that bad!

Meal2: Broccoli slaw sautéed in ghee

topped with an all beef patty

sautéed summer squash (also in ghee)

            Handful of almonds

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!  I have been feeling so wonderful and pumped for this W30, although I had a terrible night's sleep last night.  The Calms Forte just didn't cut it.  Back to Benadryl.  I've been feeling strong and committed, until I saw my doctor.  Looks like I need to postpone my W30 for another month, unless I can find some evidence to convince me otherwise.  I had a spinal decompression and fusion on March 4th and was told my body NEEDS the calcium in order to build new bone for the fusion to work.  This is just a little premature for me to be cutting out dairy products (according to doc).  I challenged the calcium-in-dairy notion by saying I was consuming lots of kale and broccoli (and I mean lots) but the bioavailability of calcium from plant sources is not optimal for laying down new bone.  Rats.  And rats again.  It's okay, I know the Whole 30 will be ready for me anytime I am ready to start.  I need for my back to heal.  I'm only 55 and was told I can run and ski and do all the things I used to do before the pain overtook my life.  But I definitely feel scared that I might be shortchanging myself.  I don't take calcium supplements, and quite honestly don't believe that they're the answer, but now I don't know what to do.  Apparently it can take 6-12 months for the fusion process to be complete and solid.  I'm really sad about this.  I'll have to do some research and see what I can find.  If anyone has sources or suggestions, I'd love to hear about it.  At any rate, here was my compliant start to the day:

B'fast - 8 veal meatballs in coconut sauce, 1/2 sweet potato baked rounds, double serving of steamed brussels sprouts

Lunch - large salad with sliced beef and topped with salsa fresca (in honor of Cinco de Mayo).  We had a party at work, and I brought my own compliant lunch knowing that there would be nothing I could eat.

Dinner - last of the veal meatballs (about 5) and a huge plate of steam-sauteed veggies - broccoli, carrots, asparagus, onions with a side of sweet red pepper and 1/4 avocado

I feel such a let down.  I guess I will investigate before I completely abandon this, but I've got to admit I'm scared.

If nuts were your trigger, beware of tahini as well then as it is seed based and can have the same result.   ;)

Aia, I have to agree with Ladyshanny - it would probably help to cut out tahini. I did and it really helped. And I LOVE tahini. But if I've got gut issues, tahini makes it worse.  I've had a container of tahini in my fridge and ate some once or twice this year and right away felt sloggy and gross and very soon after had diarrhea.  I've read sesame seeds have more phytic acid than grains, which can disrupt the gut. I'm keeping my hopes up that it ain't forever. But for now, no tahini for me.

SO many good recipes out there that my gut loves.

Robbone bummer! Yes good that it's at beginning rather than at end. Sugar is in almost everything prepped in packages. If not sugars, then something I can't recognize as a preservative, flavoring, coloring, oils etc. .

So today I have some kind of bug - it started blooming late yesterday afternoon with a sore throat and then headache, body ache. I slept most of this morning away. Going to work this aft but not much. Have to say again again again - since I've changed my diet and eating habits in Jan, I've been sick two - three days tops. None of this week to two-week lingering crud anymore! And my sicks days are not terrible. I'm a big baby when sick so am ecstatic that this is one of the many pros of changing eating habits. I might just stick with W30ish paleo eating after this month for a while - like no dairy for a bit longer and definitely no sugar.

Sick hasn't affected appetite:

M1 3 eggs with chicken and bacon

M2 2 eggs with chicken and rainbow chard

M3 dunno yet - maybe more eggs

When I'm sick I crave eggs. Fortunately, my gut responds well to eggs.

Thank you bronnyd! I'll be aware of tahina ;)

Today I'm fully recovered and I have even done some work out. And the most amazing thing occurred... my period came WITHOUT any pain!!!! Considering that most of the times I kind of die on the first day, I'm ecstatic!!!!

I guess this is due to the W30, but I'm only on day 5... can it be only due to this? Have any of you also experienced the same while on the W30?

Welp, all I know is when I don't eat sugar, my periods are WAY easier both physically and emotionally. That said, I stopped getting periods at age 45 so no more worries. :)

Lori, that's really tough, I'm sorry. I am a physician and will admit I am surprised at your doctor's suggestions, but would not dare contradict him/her without more evidence in the matter. To my knowledge calcium from other sources (including supplements) is equally beneficial but I am not a bone or metabolism specialist. I agree you should look into this a little further. If you do decide to eat dairy, you can still reap tons of benefits from following the rest of the program even though it would not be a "whole30". Either way stick around the forum and keep us updated!

Finally read all of the posts! Nice job everyone, and kudos to those recognizing their off roaring and sticking with the program and with us. I know it is not easy!

M1: tons of frittata with broccoli, a little blah since it was steamed broccoli but I was on the go

M2: chocolate chili (again!) with sweet potato, broccoli, a banana and some berries

M3: a humongous plate of impromptu curry (I mixed á can of coconut milk with a couple baked chicken thighs, curry powder, chili powder, coriander, cardamom and cinnamon) over cauliflower rice, broiled zucchini and broiled fennel. I am spoiling myself. I definitely miscalculated the coconut milk to chicken ratio since my curry is more like a stew. Oh well, more for breakfast.

Bronnyd, a whole30 convention sounds delightful!

Does anybody else feel like they have to pee 458274537 times a day? i don't remember this from prior whole30s!

Day 5 !

It's not helping that my 10 month old wakes up at 5am (and we don't need to get up until 7:20!!)

I so feel you on this! My kiddo (17 months) still wakes at least once in the night and is up for the day at 4:30am. GAH!

Today (Day 5), in honoring the timeline, was definitely a "KILL ALL THE THINGS" kind of day. I woke up feeling so clear and fresh, but by 9am I was grumpy and irritable. And it's stayed that way since! Yuck. Looking forward to this stage passing. I didn't get my work out in either, which I think just made it worse.

My win for the day: no snacking between meals!

Here are my meals for the day:

Breakfast:

3 poached eggs

steamed frozen veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots)

oven roasted sw potato rounds

leftover romesco sauce

black coffee

Lunch:

garlic shrimp

sautéed onion & garlic

mixed salad greens

1/2 avocado

leftover romesco sauce

Dinner:

thai-style beef "stir-fry" w/

broccoli

red pepper

zucchini & carrot ribbons

onion

garlic

coconut aminos

chili flakes

fresh basil

Party Fare: - a work thing for my hubby. all good wine and good food. ouch!

3 small slices chorizo (compliant - I know 'cause hubby brought it!)

Thanks booksandcoffee - I appreciate your support as I explore this some more.  I have a thread going in the W30 + Medical Conditions too.  I haven't bailed on my W30, but I'm really scared that I will be the statistic (failed fusion).  I picked up some calcium fortified orange juice yesterday and will be adding that to my meals.  I know it's not great, but it's also not off-limits.  I've got to check some labels on almond milk too, but every one I've seen has carageenan or other junk in them.  I haven't bailed yet, but I'm teetering.  Slept lousy again, probably from all the thoughts rumbling around about my back and healing.  I'm going to check out compliant calcium supplements as well, and check with my very well versed osteopath about the most absorbable form of calcium and what else can boost bone growth (I'm already post-menopausal with osteopenia).

Bfast - asparagus, broccoli, onion, jalapeno, sweet potato stir fry with 2 eggs, turmeric, pepper, cayenne, 8 oz oj

Lunch - spinach salad, balsamic/olive oil dressing, roast chicken with mango salsa (forgot the dang oj)

Dinner - crockpot pork hock with mulled apple sauce, broccoli salad with homemade mayo, roasted rutabaga and carrots

I've started a revolution at work !  Since I completed the first Whole30 in Jan, a lot of people have noticed that I've lost weight and asked me how.  I've spewed all sorts of amazing things about the Whole30, and pretty much announced it to the office that I was doing it again this month.

Six, 6, SIX people have come to me in the past week to ask me advise and general questions about Whole30, and 4 of them are going to start soon!  The other two aren't quite on board yet, but I know they will come around.  :)

For today:

M1:

2 Fried eggs

1/2 roasted sweet potato

Salsa

M2:

Leftover Mexican pulled pork

Salsa & Sweet peppers

M3:

Sausage and Pepper skillet.

http://lexiscleankitchen.com/2013/08/28/sausage-peppers-onions/

This has become a regular meal in our house, I'm obsessed with anything that has sausages in it.  LOL.  I could eat this every day.

And just because dinner was so freaking awesome last night, I had to take a picture.  LOL.  I'm not normally one of those people who post pictures of every meal, so don't worry!

Poukie - That looks AMAZING!!!! I try to get pictures every day and I upload them at the end of the day on my instagram account. I probably drive my friends nuts, but I like to do it. Oh well!.

Alaya- Oh boy!!! 4am is ROUGH. Last night she slept ALL night and she didn't get up until after 7am!! woohooo!!

last night my dinner was just kind of thrown together. Pan fried fish in ghee, with asparagus, tomatoes, and something else that I can't remember.

Day 6

Today I woke up and it's like the fog has lifted!! I feel energized and awake! YAY! ( could be because my daughter slept all night.. or the whole30.. not sure!)

Meal1 was rushed and I didn't get everything I wanted.

3 eggs cooked in olive oil

            sweet potato with ghee

Meal2: browned GF meat

             sweet potato

             brussel sprouts

             black olives

Preworkout - I brought a bunch of spaghetti squash. I haven't been eating fruit at all. Doing really well with it.

meal3 - not sure yet, but probably more pan fried fish, and more veggies!

Oh, I also brought roasted parsnips and carrots with me too.

SO MANY CARBY VEGGIES!

I guess I need more green veggies.. which I have been doing in salads, but I feel like all I'm eating are the heavier veggies.

ladyshanny: Thank you! I am really amazed at how quickly I've been able to transition to no snacking this time. I think it was the commitment to eating balanced snacks at the beginning. I do feel like I'm still slightly over-eating at meals to make it through, but I trust that will adjust itself over time.

PoukieBear: All of that food looks amazing and I love that you are spreading the Whole 30 goodness around the office. Bonus: that should add some extra motivation/inspiration as you move forward!

WholeMama623: I am super jealous of your 7am wake up! We've had a few nights like that, but nothing consistent. I'm actually hoping that both of us on the Whole 30 will help improve his sleep.

--------------

Day 6 was a rollercoaster for me. I had moments of "kill all the things," moments of extreme tiredness, and moments of feeling great. My skin is breaking out in a way that I haven't seen in years. Even with my last Whole 30, or on other cleanses. Yikes!

Was able to avoid snacking again today, and I was amazed that although I ate dinner at 5pm, I was not hungry after my last dance class ended at 9pm. (I used to always be hungry after dance!)

Here's what I ate today:

Breakfast:

3 poached eggs

mixed salad greens

1/2 avocado

Bubbies sauerkraut

olive oil, salt & chili flakes

black coffee

Post-WO:

4 hard-boiled egg whites

mustard

Lunch: (Ginormous!)

leftover thai beef “stir-fry”:

broccoli

red pepper

carrot & zucchini ribbons

onion & garlic

coconut aminos,

fresh basil, salt & chili flakes

soaked & dried cashews

oven baked sw potato rounds

Dinner:

turkey burger w/

homemade mayo

1/4 avocado

oven roasted sw potato rounds

steamed frozen broccoli

Bubbies sauerkraut
