dwerder
Today I'm reintroducing gluten grains, and I started my day with a bowl of regular oatmeal (not steel cut) with scrambled eggs mixed in (used to be one of my faves). Since then I've had stomach cramping - is this expected with oats? Wasn't sure if that qualified for gluten, even though that's what I had heard once. thanks! kirkor
It's not that oats in-and-of-themselves have gluten, but they are processed on the same equipment as wheat, barley, and other gluten grains. >Since then I've had stomach cramping - is this expected with oats? Nothing is necessarily expected --- that's why we do a Whole30 + reintros!
dwerder
Thanks - I'm reluctant to continue to re-intro today b/c I'm not particularly comfortable!
Moderators Tom Denham Posted December 9, 2015 Moderators Share Posted December 9, 2015 Suspending testing until you feel good again is wise since you seem to have had such a notable reaction to the oatmeal.
dwerder
Makes sense. So if gluten is not the potential culprit here, I should assume it's oats themselves, correct?
GFChris
You would need to test an item that you know has gluten, to pinpoint your reaction. Maybe take a break from reintros for a couple days, and then reintro something like pasta, bread or crackers and see how you do?

MrsMarks
Thanks - I'm reluctant to continue to re-intro today b/c I'm not particularly comfortable! If you are not feeling comfortable stille wait a few more days. No need to rush

praxisproject
You can have reactions to grains outside of gluten as well. While white rice I have few problems with, brown rice in a normal volume can give me stomach cramps. For me, anything "wholegrain" is always worse, it's the grain coating I have the most trouble with.

QuilterInVA
I have celiac disease and the things to avoid are wheat, barley and rye. If you suspect you are really sensitive to gluten, look for the gluten free seal on the foods you buy. That insures there is no cross contamination. GFChris
I have celiac disease and the things to avoid are wheat, barley and rye. Include malt on the things to avoid if living with celiac disease, as malt contains gluten as well.
