Penzey's - What's a Girl To Do??

I made a stop by Penzey's and smelled lots of yummy spice blends but was surprised at how many had sugar listed in the ingredients. I was a good girl though and made sure I read all of the ingredients so I couldn't use the excuse that I didn't know until AFTER I used it!

If you are not familiar with Penzey's Spices and Herbs, check them out at http://www.penzeys.com/. Since we do so much more cooking, they can help with spicing up our meals!

I picked up the following blends and would like some ideas on how to use them.

http://www.penzeys.c...sunnyparis.html

http://www.penzeys.c...yscurryhot.html

http://www.penzeys.c...eysBBQ3000.html

http://www.penzeys.c...hickentaco.html (their regular Taco Seasoning has sugar)

http://www.penzeys.c...ysperiperi.html (got this for free when I told the girl I forgot my coupon from my mailer!)

I can't wait to get to cooking!!!

Funny. I have the Chicken Taco blend and always thought it tasted kind of lame. But I used it the other day on some ground chicken (sautéed onions and red peppers first in CO). I added some fresh cilantro at the end and really enjoyed it! It was especially nice fore breakfast the next day with avocado, egg and salsa.

I was just looking on their site for a re-up and was disappointed that a few mixes I wanted included sugar.

Michelle at NomNomPaleo uses Sunny Paris a lot, mostly to season chicken. I used to use Fox Point (the same but with salt) on potatoes and in eggs. And salad dressing. Chicken cutlets. Chowder. It has a nice mellow flavor. It would be good on fish, and in a "fish in a packet." (Or fish en papillote = fish, herbs, veg in foil--makes its own sauce, a zillion combinations online.)

Curry for soup, chicken salad, and um curries. :)

I don't know peri peri but the Penzey's site has recipes for all of their spices.

If you go again, pick up their Smoked Paprika. (Smitten Kitchen has an awesome Goulash that uses it. Imagine you'd save to sub out flour or something but would be easy.) I always thought paprika was a red powder that smelled mostly like cardboard and was used for the color. My mom's was probably 20 years old.

Aleppo Pepper is good. I buy the Cajun Seasoning by the large bag and use it on chicken (sautéed in butter--or ghee now--to make blackened chicken). (Oh no! What if it has sugar? I haven't used it since I started w30.)

Love their cinnamon. Vanilla beans. Vanilla. Whole Nutmeg. (Now Im remembering their Ginger Powder in a nice gingerbread cake. Darn.) Peppercorns (though I've gotten good one elsewhere.) Ancho chili powder. So many good things! And the site has loads of recipes--prob not many compliant but you could get ideas. Also chowhound has a lot of Penzeys recs.

ETA: Cajun DOES have sugar! Blast!

I put Penzeys Mural on my eggs every morning. I have a large Sunny Paris on squash, sweet potato, frittata, fish. I also love Penzeys Arizona Dreaming on chicken-- grilled or on a whole chicken put in the crockpot. I keep Black and Red ( pepper and cayenne mix) and use it when I want to spice up a dish. I go to Penzeys in West Hartford when I visit my daughter. I love that store. Just bought some new ones to try. But in the end you can't beat Penzeys Cinnamon!!!

That sucks! I came close to buying it but didn't since I bought a ton of other stuff.

Thanks for all of the ideas! I can't to use them on all my yummy meats I bought! I already have Fox Point and can imagine anything tasting any better! I love it on eggs and corn on the cob (when I could eat it).

So I stand corrected. I went to Penzeys today and that place is fantastic. The seasonings are so potent that they make you salivate :-) I picked up a couple and plan to replenish when my old stock goes down. Thanks for the push to visit.

I sniffed everything in the store like a crazy person the first time I went in there. It's so much fun. I love Fox Point, the Greek blend, and the Rogan Josh. In fact, I'm going to introduce a leg o' lamb (what LOL should really stand for!) to some Rogan Josh tonight! And of course, the cinnamon is the bomb. Who knew it could be so delicious? I'll never go back to the blah stuff in the grocery store!
