Whole30 September 1 2013

I finished my 3rd day pretty well.

I checked the ingredients on my can of coconut milk and was a bit suprised, three e-numbers. Does that mean I should hunt for another brand? My local supermarket does not have a lot of choice so I might have to go to the organic shop.

Can some of you check their cans, to see if there is a brand that is ok?

I had the same thing with my mustard (BBQ sauce calls for it I think), some of them have sugar added.

Also things like hot pepper sauce (in the BBQ sauce recipe), mine has a thickener (corn starch), does that mean it is off the list?

The book does not really mention any of that, so I am a bit lost.

There is a thread on compliant coconut milk in the "can I have" section - you might be able to find a brand in there that is available to you :) I try and avoid any numbers, and have a few options in Australia that are just coconut!

In terms of sauces, most commercially available ones will have sugar, thickeners etc that aren't compliant. If something is on the "don't have" list ie, corn, you shouldn't have anything made with corn - like corn starch. No sweeteners, even natural or artificial, no alcohol (like some mustard), no soy etc. MSG, carrageenan and sulfites (unless it states naturally occurring) are also out! Label reading is tricky and can be time consuming to start off with - I get really annoyed at the things that have unnecessary ingredients!

Check you salt, spices, stocks - everything with a label!!

Checking back in everyone - how has Day 3 (or 1 or 2) been for you?

As predicted by Whole30 - today was tough for me.  However, I was proud that I made compliant Chili and served it to the whole family.  I ate it over stir fried yellow squash (Whole 30 recipe from somewhere), but I cooked pasta & grated cheese for the rest of the family.  I thought it was a fair trade.  However, I ate too much, and now my stomach hurts some.

I did learn today that I think one reason I get so hungry right before dinner, is that I am usually in the kitchen then.  I will continue to try and do as much prep as possible ahead of time - more of an option on some meals compared to others.

Thanks all!  Goal for Day 4: Eat more protein & fat at breakfast.

Can someone tell me how to respond to another person's post please?

If you mean like this, just click the "Quote" button and it will open a reply box with the material from the post, as above. Since this is a thread/forum you don't, as far as I know, actually "reply to" a post. Rather, you join in the conversation. But, if you want folks to know that you are addressing a particular comment/question, this should do it.

In other news... day three. Finally, my headache seems to have gone away. In July and August I became addicted to my summer treat of iced coffee with milk and sugar and allowed myself some Diet Coke. I don't drink the coffee for coffee's sake so working up to drinking it black is pointless. It's the milk and sugar that make it a treat. And, of course, soda is off the table no matter what. I don't really miss it once I 'get going,' but those first few days. Ugh.

I just had pulled pork (spices only, no sauce, etc), a baked sweet potato with salt and pepper, and olives. A fast and delish meal at the end of a long day. I'm actually not much of a fruit eater but treated myself to a peach with dinner since it looked perfect. It was. Lunch was romaine, olives, avocado, and lemon juice on the run. I had a can of tuna with me but literally no time to deal with it. As it was I didn't get lunch until around 2:30. Breakfast was scrambled eggs with spinach, avocado with lemon, and compliant sausage patties. I had a few nuts on the run around noon. Once the semester gets rolling my schedule will "smooth out." But, I'm not hungry and not craving anything so that's good.

The real good news has to do with my June W30 (really W28). In May, before I was committed to doing it, I bought two new pairs of pants. Then, I lost 14 pounds. I had to keep hiking them up all day. As someone said, "Not a bad problem to have." I don't want to buy any more pants until after this month, so I guess I'll be hiking my pants up all September!

On to Wednesday!

Good morning everyone! I can't believe I'm up to day 4 already! This morning I had something different for breakfast to try and avoid getting sick of eggs too quickly. Last night I made a chia pudding with coconut milk and cacao/maca powder and coconut flakes - all natural, organic with no additives. It set pretty hard and tasted great, but the fat made it so filling I wasn't able to eat a lot of it! I ate a high fat/mod protein/low carb diet before starting the Whole30 so I am used to consuming lots of fat.

I hope everyone is doing well and has a great day! Lots of deep breaths and big glasses of water :)

Hayley, chia seeds are ok on the whole 30 but your concoction (i'd call it chia pudding...that i'd have for dessert!) doesn't fit the template - there is very little protein, and no vegies! if you want to have the chia, i'd stick to sprinkling them on salads/vegies or putting them in dishes (like in meatballs etc)

Morning... starting Day 3 here.  I got my walk in this morning - good since I lightly rolled my ankle this weekend.  Waiting for my husband and school age daughter to leave the house before I make my own breakfast.  Probably sweet potato hash and eggs again.  I may try the coconut oil again, but yesterday the smell made me nauseous!  blech, talk about a way to put you off your food.  I am hoping the afternoon headache is better today.  I made a large pitcher of ice tea without sugar yesterday, and I plan to drink some of that today.  I know we Should swear off caffine, but there are only so many things I feel I can tackle at the same time.   :)  I will check in later I am sure.

One of my goals during this W30 (this is my 3rd this year)... was to cut back or eliminate caffeine. So I made a SMART goal. One cup in the morning after breakfast.... and I tend to make a big cup (about 10oz) and then add water on top of it. Lately, I haven't even been able to finish it. And I am usually a BIG lover of black coffee considering I have celiac and cancer so on chemo days-- the caffeine (and yes, even sugar) used to help me... so I have to push back the craving this time... decaf or no caf! lol..

We all have our vices... just pick and choose your battles and ask yourself if it's really worth it. To me, on bad days, it is. Simple reward for the fight everyday... and you have 27 more days! look how fast time flies!

Cheers mate!

I found compliant coconut milk! Hawaiian Sun brand--it is in the FREEZER section, in a square bag. The ingredients are simply: coconut milk, water. That's all!

There is another brand, called "Profood Hawaii's Best" 100% PURE Coconut milk. The ingredients list is simply: coconut milk. YAY! No water, even! It is also in the FREEZER aisle.

It may be a long shot to find it where you live, but good luck!

P.S. Marjan, It does say in the book, on page 212, gray box: MSG, Suflites (in all the coconut milk cans), and Carageenan. I would lump other thickeners in that category too. Here is a really easy-to-use quick guide to food additives, what they're for, and what they do to your body:

http://www.cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htm#safety_summary

If you can figure out what those e-numbers stand for, then that guide ^ will be helpful!

I'm avoiding ALL sulfites, because I'm trying to figure out a trigger for my awful/terrible/no-good eczema.

Cheers!

Can crispy fish skin be "food with no brakes"? lol. I cooked a salmon fillet to make salmon salad and after I pulled the skin off I started happily munching away! I don't think I've ever eaten fish skin before, but it was good. It was only a few bites, but I think I could have scarfed it all down! Crazy!

Anyway, day three down. About to enjoy my cup of hot tea.

I am out there grilling in the dark to have stuff for tomorrow breakfast and lunch.

I was so exhausted today but went to yoga and it saved me.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around munching on fish skin.  Maybe if I grilled it first.  Yikes!!!

HI all, I am off to the Health/Organic shop and the Asian shop to stock some stuff (Coconut milk I hope).

I also ordered organic meat online and I am going to make some Whole30 compliant bacon! YEAH!

Had another crap night sleep last night but the headache seems to have gone.

Somebody asked If I had lost weight today, surely that cannot be after three days? (might have been the slimming top I had underneath my t-shirt  ^_^ ).

I recall that somebody way earlier in the thread talked about their doctor not wanting to help with their baby wish. The specialists in the hospital told me literally that with my weight and my age it would not be very likely that I would have another baby. They were WRONG!!

So do not let that put you down!

Depending on your diet before, you could quite possibly look slimmer within a few days as you lose water weight :)

There sure are a lot of September birthdays, today is mine :) I purposely scheduled a check up for tomorrow so I wouldn't celebrate in unhealthy ways today. My son is on board the Whole 30 with me at home and though my mom said she'd cook salmon for me and pasta for him he said he was giving this a shot as much as I was and would she make him fish, too. He hates fish! It's nice to see he doesn't want to tempt me with his meals though. I'm feeling pretty sluggish today, but still managed to get my workout in this morning and have already set up to meet some others for yoga tonight just to keep me focused. Sure wish I didn't have to work today though, I'm already a bit late.

On the food side, I've been adding coconut oil to my black coffee for a couple months now, blend it up in this personal sized oyster blender thing I've had forever and not only does it hold me for breakfast at 7am, but I'm not starving at 12:30pm when I finally get to have lunch. That's really what sold me on the filling ability of cooking/using healthy fats. Good luck to everyone. This is Day 4 for me and the longest I've gone so far on a healthy streak. I hope everyone has a great day! Oh, also, you guys have inspired me to buy sweet potatoes, but I didn't have the time last night to cook them. I will tonight though. Thank you!

I agree!!!  I am so tired of the negativity of doctors and such around fertility.  My cousin just had her first baby at 45.   I will say it is so important to go into a pregnancy healthy (I had mine at 37 and 39 ~ 18 mos apart ~and the second pregnancy was much harder because I wasn't as healthy).

And yea to the compliment.  I only teach two days a week and wore the same pants as last week and felt more attractive in them.

Hope you found the stuff you were looking for!  Let us know how the bacon making goes.  What cut of pork do you buy??

This isn't food related per se, but if you want some "general" inspiration, Google <diana nyad ted> or search on YouTube for a couple of TED Talks by Diana Nyad. Fabulous, especially for those of us on the other side of, say, 50.  ;)

Just had breakfast - two hard boiled eggs, sliced tomato, avocado with lemon, and a peach - before they go bad. For lunch I'm packing my absolute favorite, chocolate chili. Yummmm!

Tonight is my first day back at the gym after being gone all summer. I've been jogging with some swimming and biking, but this will be the first workout with a coach, warming up and pounding the bag. It will be grueling I know, but I'm actually looking forward to it.

Have a fab day!

I have been reading about her on FB (Diana Nyad).  I'm trying CrossFit for the first time at 9:30 this morning.  I'm a bit scared.  I do yoga (power and all types) every day and love to dance (NIA and 5 rhythms) and do the elliptical but I abhor running and I have a tweaky left knee.  But I promised myself when my youngest started K and I had two days 'off' that I would try it so today is the day.  I am a little freaked out.  I hope there are some other women there.  The only person I know who does it is a huge dude at my gym.  Wish me luck!

I did find the Tetra packs! Good tip!

I also bought some organic lamb's liver to fry up, yum! :-)

For lunch I fried a chicken breast in clarified butter and added it to salad greens, celery, cucumber, tomato and half an avocado. Some Whole30 bbq sauce on top...easy lunch (er...meal 2 :-))

Morning all!  Great to see so many of you already up and at it on the other side of the world!

Day 4 here has begun well.

Clarification question:  The 1-2 cups of veggies recommendation - is that raw or cooked cups?  I put two huge handfuls of spinach into the pan this morning... but we all know what happens to spinach once cooked at all.  So was that enough veggie?

I get to visit today with a friend who previously did a Whole30 and is now eating paleo 6 days per week.  She said she may have some coconut flakes for me - so I am looking forward to that.  Good news for me... canola oil is not forbidden.  My husband had cooked dinner with it the other night, and I didn't want to have that derail everything.  So I had sort of ignored it, but then today I went ahead and looked it up.  Not recommended certainly, but not a deal breaker either.  Whew.

Today is day three for DH and me.  Yesterday was waaaay easier than the first day, and I woke up this morning about an hour and a half before my alarm.  I don't know if that's supposed to be the 'not sleeping well' that is predicted for the first week or two, or if the not-food hangover is going away.  Either way, I like it.

I've had a headache for going on 5 weeks, and it seems less intense this morning, so I hope that means it is going away!
