mpr7876
Newbie here (day 2). First, Is it OK to pan fry meat/veggies/etc with evoo? I have been using evoo for cooking, as salad dressing and mayo daily. When is too much, too much? Should I be measuring the oil portions? Thanks. kirkor
EVOO has a lower smoke point I think so it might be more likely to scorch when used to pan fry.
GFChris
Use EVOO for dressing or to top cooked veggies for flavor. It's not the optimum cooking oil, as kirkor stated. Better options include coconut oil, clarified butter or ghee. The meal template recommends 1-2 thumbs of oil per meal.
Moderators Tom Denham Posted November 30, 2014 Moderators Share Posted November 30, 2014 You can cook with EVOO, but it is not a good idea. Heat damages olive oil. You won't taste a problem, but the structure of the oil changes when it gets hot. I cooked with EVOO for more than a year before I made a shift to ghee or coconut oil when using heat, so it won't kill you. But you can and should choose another cooking fat. Guest Andria
Not only is evoo a poor oil to cook with you want to vary your fat intake to also include good saturated fats ( like those mentioned above). Tallow from grass fed beef is another excellent option.
mpr7876
Thanks. I may start using coconut oil for frying. Does eating coconut as a fat need to stick w the 2 thumb rule?
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted November 30, 2014 Moderators Share Posted November 30, 2014 Does eating coconut as a fat need to stick w the 2 thumb rule? Have you checked the meal planning template? It goes into detail about portion sizes for different types of fats. For instance, if eating coconut flakes, it's 1-2 heaping handfuls, avocado is 1/2-1 whole avocado, etc.
Hbombdiggity71
Huh, I've been using EVOO to cook for years. I've never had a scorching issue, but I wasn't aware that is broke down the integrity of the oil. I also don't usually cook things on much higher than medium heat. I'll have to start using more coconut oil. I've been trying to incorporate at the healthy changes I've made while being on W30 into my regular cooking when I'm not strictly following the program.
