Derval
Coconut butter has got more of the flesh in and is used for eating rather than cooking. It's dangerously good.
the_wendy_house
Aaah I see, thanks! I bought some thinking it was just a way cheaper version of coconut oil but then decided Tesco weren't that stupid... Now I'm stuck with a packet - what does one eat with coconut butter?! Moderators Tom Denham Posted January 3, 2013 Moderators Share Posted January 3, 2013 Coconut butter would be more expensive than the oil. I eat it by itself, but you could pair it with fruit.
Derval
Cheaper? Isn't usually! It's lovely melted over berries but that's a bit swypo. I don't know if I have any properly compliant suggestions. Just eat it off a spoon? What brand is it?
kb0426
I like coconut butter on sweet potato and butternut squash.

Kim Christensen
What to do with coconut butter? Put it right in my mouth. That stuff can be dangerous for me!

Then little Sally Sue, her mouth did swoon.... It was great in march, it was better in June.... The With a tear in her eye, she waved bye bye... the_wendy_house
Hahahah! Ok, so I'll just eat some on it's own then The pack I found (Dunn's River and there's nothing but coconut in it) is cheap in Tesco. 99p for 200g whereas it's £6-something for 250ml (ish) of the oil. I know grams and ml aren't comparable measures but it looks to me like six packs of the butter would be more than what I get in my little pot of oil. Might be wrong though! Derval
That should be around £8 I'd say, see if you liek it then stock up, must be a mis-price.
Kirsteen
Just to confuse you even more I bought Nutiva's 'Coconut Manna' which seems to be coconut butter, Higher Nature's 'Coconut Butter' is just cocout oil with the smell and taste removed and is still used for frying. Most supermarkets stock Patak's Creamed Coconut in either blocks or sachets which is usually cheaper and contains nothing but coconut but is more like the butter. Ain't life confusing
the_wendy_house
Isn't it just! Oh do you think that much, Derval? Perhaps the packaging is confusing. Nonetheless I'll try it and stock up! It's the block/sachet type so maybe it's not as buttery as some stuff. Confuuuuuusing!
Derval
This is the type I've had http://www.iherb.com/Artisana-100-Organic-Raw-Coconut-Butter-16-oz-454-g/27155 which comes in sachets too http://www.iherb.com/Artisana-100-Organic-Raw-Coconut-Butter-Whole-Coconut-Flesh-Puree-10-Packs-1-19-oz-33-7-g-Each/32161
praxisproject
Watch out for solid coconut stuff (often comes in a wrapped fridge block) that's uber-cheap, it may be nasty nasty Copha It smells weird and is loaded with trans fats. Some brands are annoying with the wording. Artisana Coconut Butter is thick like a nut paste (but white), it'll go hard when it's cold and sloppy when it's warm. We get a coconut oil in Australia from a brand called Loving Earth and while it's very nice, they annoying label it coconut butter, but it's just virgin coconut oil in a jar dark enough you can't see inside. The fat and carb counts will give away coconut oil vs coconut butter. The oil will be 0 carb and almost all (or all) fat.
penotti
Watch out with some creamed coconut brands too, i discovered mine contained sulfur dioxide: http://en.wikipedia..../Sulfur_dioxide Figured that couldn't be good news...
the_wendy_house
Thanks all - I wonder if this isn't more like creamed coconut you know... It has that consistency I associate with coconut cream, but clearly companies all use different names for the various products. Regardless, it is "meh" at best so I shan't be buying any more I don't think!
praxisproject
Might be less virgin than some of the others, I notice the virgin coconut oils are much sweeter (one is so sweet I can't cook meat in it lol).
Derval
I saw a jar in the health food shop yesterday labelled coconut butter and then "no coconut taste" so the opposite of what you'd expect. I reckon it must be the refined coconut oil.
the_wendy_house
Yeah that sounds like my coconut oil, though it still has a very faint coconut taste to it.
praxisproject
Some are made to have as little taste as possible, others the opposite. I have two kinds. One is lovely in sweet things (Loving Earth - they name it Coconut Butter but they mean coconut oil), the other is great with meat (Melrose Coconut Oil).
