missmess
This may be a dumb question, and I apologize in advance that it may be a repeat. I swear I saw it asked/answered during my last whole30, but cannot find it. Is bacon fat allowed for cooking? thank you!
EmilyB456
Yes, as long as it has been rendered from compliant bacon ( no sugar in the ingredients list). There are better fat choices, but bacon is so yummy!

Susan W
It is allowed. Keep in mind that animals hold toxins in their fat. If your bacon is from a happy hog, that is a higher quality fat than if from a hog who is not able to live a happy life.

missmess
hmm it wasn't from compliant bacon.. but the sugar should have burned off right? I am totally ok with using another fat, but I was planning to make a recipe that I always used bacon fat and loved it!

KJT
And on a similar note...I cooked up some compliant bacon and poured off the fat into a jar. How long will it keep in the refrigerator?
nutmegananne
KJT, I keep a running jar of bacon fat in the fridge for months and months. We just add more to it as we cook bacon. We do use it fairly frequently, as my husband fries his eggs in it every single morning, but I don't usually clean out a jar and start fresh until after several (4-6) months. If it starts to smell off at all, you'll be able to tell.

Sherri Cole
Ok so I am on day 6 of my 1st whole30. I have eaten some bacon that is uncured but did have sugar. Will this throw off all my hard work the past 5 days? Does this mean I have to start all over?? Tell me it isn't so!!!! ha! learning process! Kirsteen
Hi Sherri, I wouldn't necessarily start over but you will have to stop eating it. Any bacon that has sugar no matter how small an amount is out on a W30. I would just carry on and, if at the end of your W30, you're still craving sugar then I'd add a few days, if not then you're fine.
Sherri Cole
great. I will cut it out of this whole30 now and make sure that I extend a few days if I need to. So helpful, thank you!
